Helen Jenkins Dubai 70.3

Interested to see how she goes, Helen was bloody brilliant in the ITU when she was at the top of her game. Double world champ.

Getting some swim form back and learning to tumble turn again. Wish her luck.

Yeah. Will be intetesting.
Is she trying to get competitive enough to try take a slot at Tokyo ? The British women have a huge list of talent and obvs can only take 3.
If I understand it right, all 3 GB slots are in theory still up for grabs since the miserable fheckers at the ITU DQd Learmonth and Taylor-Brown in the test event for being nice with each other.

All 3 slots are up for grabs but the DQ had no impact.

When they changed the event to a sprint it was no longer a selection event.

I think it is a wise move. She is getting fitter by the week but the top end speed won’t be there yet for ITU. She can test the water and get used to racing again.

As a general observation, I would be surprised if she had the speed to make it to Tokyo; my guess would be coming back into it at the longer distances.

Came through in a lull - be amazed if she makes it to Tokyo.

You guys are confusing me with all this talk of Tokyo. Maybe I should have added "WTC" or "IM" to my subject header, but to be clear, she is coming back into the game by taking her first punt at non-drafting at Dubai 70.3. This is definitely not going to qualify her for Tokyo!!! ;-)

Yes, sometimes I wonder if some people have any idea of the ITU circuit and the olympic qualification. Helen Jenkins, after 4 years out, has 0 chance to go to Tokyo: no points, no fitness, and a great bunch of young and talented brittish girls in the top 20-30: Taylor Brown, Learmonth, Stanford, Holland, Coldwell, ....even Stimpson or Potter...

Just a note of clarity on the DQ. Even without the DQ the result was not going to qualify as a AQ spot because of the modified run distance.

Team GB cancelled auto spots (the women knew of the cancelled AQ spots before the start so thus likely created the "hand holding tie" to come into play), whereas the US federation did not (Summer Rap got her spot).

To be fair, GB did not fully cancel auto-qualification. Pre-Race they told the athletes that with the shortened run, the only auto-qual scenario that was on the table was if Vicky Holland won the test event, she would have auto-qualified (as a past olympic medalist). The criteria was originally for her if she podiumed she was in, but they changed that with the shortened event.

There's no way Helen Jenkins gets in for the GB olympic picture. She'd need a massive start to the year in order to get enough points to even be eligible for olympic selection, because she hasn't been racing much ITU... Not to mention, that it's already going to be hard for selectors. Holland, Stanford, Learmonth, Taylor-Brown, Coldwell... that's probably your real contenders (I would have left Coldwell off the list, but she is a legit consideration with the MTR on the table, she's maybe not quite at the level of the other 4 over olympic distance (may be a domestique option, although GB has notoriously botched that tactic a number of times), but in sprint and super sprint, she's a legit S-B-R..., still a long shot, given that the other 4 have all held their own in the MTR, and all have WTS podiums in the qualifying cycle), Jodie Stimpson, and a few others are longshots that are probably on the outside looking in...

Excited to see what she does this weekend. Imogen Simmonds is racing as well so some good firepower to compare Helen's result to.

Good to see her back and glad she's decided to go a bit longer, I asked her on a Twitter a couple of years ago if she fancied going long and she said there would be no chance, I think 70.3 suits her (along with Jodie) the distance is getting more exciting than Oly and ITU.

Really good race for Helen...4th place, HM in 1.25, not bad at all after such a long time out...Immogen is one of the best 70.3 athletes right now, Oliveira, 4th in 70.3 worlds 2 years ago.... Dealing with a back injury is not easy at all....(I know it because I dealt with that as well), so congrats Helen

I agree. I find 70.3 way more interesting than ITU now. I think the olympic Tri should move down to the sprint distance or up to a 70.3.

BTW, good luck to Helen, I'm rooting for her. I can always relate more to an athlete with a bit of metal in their body.

Can't believe it took so long for someone to bite :) I was taking the piss clearly.

To be fair to your comment though - Gwen ended her own streak really.

Maybe people were confusing Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Anyone ever heard of the Danish guy (A.S. Andersen) who ran a 1:08? Seems pretty quick compared to Aernouts and Bowden, who consistently have top runs at the 70.3 distance.

It's Andreas Schilling who normally races ITU. He has had a couple of top 10 finishes in WTS including a 4th place in Stockholm in 2017. He broke his arm in Hamburg WTS this year and this is his first race back and first 70.3.

Got it! I watch a lot of ITU racing on Triathlon Live, so familiar with him. I wonder why he was listed in a different format (in terms of name) than others.

I think ITU makes athletes use the 1st name on their race suit if they have multiple last names.

For eg: Javier Gomez Noya: https://www.triathlon.org/...95/javier_gomez_noya

For the Spanish folks I've met / work with they have a double barrel surname (one from mother's and one from father's double barrel name). But use the 1st one for everyday rather than the sunday-best / formal double-barrel.

Hence 'Gomez' on the kit and not Gomez-Noya. (Whereas Georgia Taylor-Brown does still use the double barrel Taylor-Brown as that's her everyday surname)
