Garmin Update

My garmin 510 automatically updated itself this morning and is now dropping gps or Ant+ signal frequently. It kept pausing and starting, which I think is only GPS related.

First, I have never had a garmin product automatically update itself without me initiating it.

Second, maybe its coincidental that my edge 510 started dropping signals today and I just need to replace the vector batteries or I had a weak connect to satellites.

The Rise of the Machines has started. Your Garmin has become self-aware.

I learned through my years that pretty much all updates will screw something up. I have learned to fear the words "update version" Especially when it comes from Apple or Garmin.

Really odd as this is the first of the dozen or so Garmin devices I have owned that auto updated.

Not directed at you, but in general:

Auto Pause is super annoying anyway. I believe a high percentage of riders will disable it after some time of riding with it on.

I cobbled see together from a few sites

I tested it on an 810

Pick your firmware and download here:
http://gawisp.com/perry/edge/

1. Plug the 500 into the PC.
2. Once the 500 is ready, copy the file to the Garmin subdirectory on your unit, renaming it to gupdate.gcd. The 500 will appear as another drive in explorer, for me, it's drive E:
3. Save your Settings\Settings.fit, Elevations\Elevations.fit, and possibly the Sports\Cycling.fit files so that you don't need to reenter all that data after the firmware update. (copy them back to the PC). These files are located in the various sub-directories under the Garmin folder. (i didn't do this, and lost all my page setups etc, so I would definitely take the time to do it)
4. Safely remove the 500 from the PC.
5. Power up the 500. If you are loading an older level firmware, it will ask you to verify you want to do this.
6. Let it update. This may take a while, be patient. Be very patient. Very.
7. Once the update completes, power the 500 back down.
8. Reattach to the PC and restore the files saved in step 3.
9. Safely remove the 500 from the PC.
10. Power up the 500, rescan for HRM, GSC-10, other devices, and re-pair them.

Has this problem been resolved by Garmin? I'm afraid to pull in my 510 (which is currently working great!) for fear of this upgrade/bug.

Hopefully, its not something that Garmin did to force people to get a new one. Something like Apple does that eventually any old gadget such as an older iPhone that cannot updated because is not longer supported and you will be force to trade in and get a newer one.
