FWIW, NP is effing useless while training. I tried to train by shooting for NP numbers and ended up not getting as much from my workouts.
I don't really need it here where it's dead-flat, but I could see the usefulness in rolling terrain.
I gave up NP when I moved from a Joule to an Edge 500 and don't miss it much. Would have been nice to have for long course tri, but I didn't feel that handicapped without it.
The main use I had for onboard TSS is for when I was on travel. I drove and brought my bike (2-4 day trips). It was nice to have an idea of TSS without needing to bring a second laptop with me for downloading files.
