I think you should change the thread title to "Garmin", because I am nearly 100% sure this is a Garmin issue not a Quarq issue.

But it's not a garmin issue either. It's a user/settings issue.

Fair enough. What is the solution to my problem as described earlier in the thread, I don't think user error is the culprit, but I'm all ears for a solution,

I had a similar/exact same issue it seems and it was with a Polar head unit. Read my post above.

And in your case I'm quite sure it was a Polar issue, so not seeing the point.

You should never search for a new device on your head unit unless you are adding a device for the first time. Once you pair your pm to your Garmin the very first time, you never have to do it again. Go to your sensors page on the 510, you should see your pm listed along with any other devices (hr, speed/cadence). Once you wake up the quarq(spin the cranks), it will automatically connect to the 510 without you having to pair it again. Also, in the sensors page, go to your pm and turn on calibration prompt. So when you wake up the quarq, you'll get a notification if you want to do a calibration (zero offset).

Edit: what's actually happening during your race mornings is that you are trying to add a new device with a bunch of other pm's directly next to you and you are adding someone else's pm. You do not need to do this at a race or on any ride for that matter. You only do it on the first time you pair a new device to that head unit. Then never again.

And if you had read my post you would know that it happened to both my Polar and Garmin. So not seeing your point.

Did you make sure that your 735 already found you power meter while in multi sport mode? If you do that, calibrate, then head off to the swim, it will be fine once you get back into T1. Do not turn the watch off or reset out of multi sport mode. You have to turn off the countdown feature that turns it off and returns back to the watch face. It took me all year and learned it this past weekend. Was driving me nuts as well. But it does work now, finds it again with no issues.

^This.

Discovered this on the FR920 when creating a swim/run activity. I don't wear the HR monitor on swim and couldn't detect it when starting the run. Found that it would only find the HR monitor if I wore it prior to the swim and connected, took it off, then put it on again after the swim and before switching to run mode.

I understand what you are saying. However in my situation, the quarq connects fine before the race to both 920 and 510. 30 to 40 min later when I get out of the water and begin the bike leg, the 920 picks up the quarq when the power meter "wakes up", but the 510 NEVER picks the power meter up again...does that make sense. If you are stumped, don't worry, no one else can figure it out either. :)

edit: to be clear, I am NOT trying to pair my quarq to my 510 each and every time I race...the two automatically connect when the Garmin is power on and the quarq wakes up. The problem is, in T1, when I start pedaling, the 510 isn't finding the pwoermeter anymore, even though it did 30 minutes prior. the 920 however, will pick up the quarq without difficulty. Seems to me that the problem is the 510. wondering if anyone has further thoughts.

It took PowerTap 9 years to fix their moisture and other issues. Quarq hasn't figured out how to make a reliable product yet. My advice would be to stop being a beta tester for them and switch to another brand (SRM, Verve, Shimano).

I guess you'll retract this when it turns out it's not moisture.....

Gotcha....

Have you tried not pairing your quarq to the 920? And see if the 510 picks it up.

A friend of mine uses the Quarq-510 combo and has never had his powermeter working at races. Very consistent in training however. He fixed it by changing some "sleep" setting, dunno what. I use P2M/Verve+520 and it always works (ok, the garmin crashed once, requiring a restart).

I have exactly the same issue. I used to turn the 510 off and on again whilst riding, but I now leave it switched off and turn it on as I reach my bike in T1.

yes, I have NOT paired it with the 920, and it still won't reconnect to the 510 in T1. pretty cool, eh?

I have auto pause and Auto power down/auto sleep disabled, so what you are describing is not an issue.

I just realized I got you mixed up with the OP. I thought you were the OP. Sounds like you guys have different issues. My apologies....

Are you up to date with your 510 firmware? Have you tried using a friends edge 500/510/520 to see if that makes a difference? You probably won't want to here this but I'd be strongly considering getting a 520. It's really a great device and much better than a 510 IMO. I know that's not a good answer to fix your problem but I bet it would fix it nonetheless and you would get some of the cooler features that comes with the 520.

Firmware is all up to date.

Absolutely agree. I thought I'd end up getting a 520, but wanted to test the waters on ST.

I'm also considering using the 920 only, and using the quick release setup to place it on the bike for easy viewing. I did my last HIM looking at my watch while on my wrist to see power, and it sucked.
