Yesterday my wife went to a baby shower. At her table she had a starting out triathlete, and an ex-girlriend of mine. I was feeling pretty good about myself as she was telling me this, as I found out the conversation shifted to the fact that I did the Ironman. That is, until I asked...
me: "Did they ask how long it took me?"
wife: "Yeah, I told them."
me: "You made sure to let them know I was hurt and unable to train for a good portion of the year, right?"
wife, indifferent: "No"
me: "So they think it took me XX hrs and XX min's, without any setbacks?!"
wife, laughing: "No, they think it took you an hour longer than that. I guess I forgot your finishing time."
me: "$@&^!"
That's what I get for being vain in the first place.

Love the reply,"We have nothing else to do." I often find that is my response when talking to someone unfamiliar with tri training / ironman.
not too bad...
in 1996, a good friend of mine goes long for the first time: Nice triathlon...he finishes in 7h (if I remember well)...
and just at the finish line, sees his wife and mother in law...
Him: I am thrilled
The in law: mmmh...when do you do a real one?
does that hurt or what?
