Frisco in October.
Guys, I have an overnight stopover in 'cisco which will also leave me the morning in town on the way back to England from Kona this October. Can any SF residents suggest any Tri/bike shops to visit for goodies if I've not maxxed out the plastic? Also any safe and nice off road run courses near Sutter Street as I've booked in at the Miyako? Naturally I'd like to see some tourist sights too!!

Any suggestions happily received.

Thanks, Julian in England.

I don't have any recommendations on run courses, as I'm from San Jose (about 60 miles south) but John Cobb's new Bicycle Sports just opened up in San Fransisco. You can certainly do a LOT of damage to the plastic in that place, I'm sure. The weather in the city should be terrific in October, so you should be able to get some great riding/running in at that time.

Hi,

>SportsBasement is a warehouse-type store with the best deals in town for shoes, running clothes, swimsuits, wetsuits, sunglasses, etc.
>Great off-road running in the Presidio and Golden Gate Park.
>For more tri-related information do a search for the San Franciscou Triathlon Club (www.sftriclub) and/or the Golden Gate Triathlon Club and join in on a club run or swim.

best,

Run in Golden Gate Park and the Presidio. If you have time, you can go the Marin Headlands for some great trail running. The hotel concierge will point you in the right direction.

And while you're there -- just a head's up -- don't call it "Frisco." Someone's likely to spill a beer on your head. The place is called either "San Francisco" or "The City". That's with a capital "T".

Sports Basement is this massive warehouse that's filled with gear. Hiking, camping, kayaking, cycling and interestingly enough, triathlon! They don't sell bikes (as far as I'm aware) but stock a lot of wetsuits, training and race clothing, bike accessories, goggles/fins/pull buoys, food... it's an awesome place.

SF is a really cool town. If you want to incorporate a little sightseeing into your training, ride Mt Tam. Run GG Bridge (actually if you park @ Baker Beach, you'll have a bitchin' run up through the Presidio too). Swim in Aquatic Park, or China Beach (not at Baker Beach! - the undertow claims several lives/year).

Hit up the SF Tri Club and see if you can join some of their workouts. Uber-friendly people, and they know the best places to ride/run.

If you're severely masochistic, get a bike and ride up Fillmore St from the Marina (heading south). Then imagine doing it 10x. Welcome to the SF Grand Prix - the only race I've ever heard of pro's walking their bikes.

And definitely visit the Castro.

Exactly how long will you be here?

I'd second the Sports Basement recommendation. Haven't been to Cobb's store, but I heard it was small. Maybe they are still stocking up?

Off-road run courses near Sutter Street? No, not unless you have a car. But, you can step out of the hotel and run up and over Laguna Street to the bay (north). You are probably a $5 cab ride from Golden Gate Park. Don't go south from your hotel....not so nice neighborhood.

By October, the bay should be halfway decent, so you could swim at Aquatic Park.

Lastly, if it works into your schedule, feel free to join one our workouts. http://www.ggtc.org/

P.S. Julian is right...DON'T call it Frisco.

If you have the time I would try to make the run over the Golden Gate. Depending on how far you want to go, you could start at your hotel and go 14-15 miles, or catch a cab to aquatic park for 12 miles, or take the cab to the marina Safeway for 11 miles - the closer you get to the bridge, the shorter the run. October is a great time of year in the City.

The US Half Marathon goes over this course, and you can get a map at www.ushalf.com.

Best advice I can give you: Don't call it Frisco, cisco, san fran or any other abbreviation like that. Call it "The City" or San Francisco. Calling it something else will get you nasty looks from the locals.

Wow, thanks guys for all the suggestions! As I'm only in "the City" from 2100-1230 I think that a visit to Cobbs and the Sportsbasement will feature if they are pretty close together. I didn't realise that foot passengers could get on the GG bridge, so a run over it will be a must do, is the GG park right on one end ?(it would seem logical) if it is and is safe I think that would make a nice round out.

I hope I didn't offend any San Franciscans with the abbreviation, I will not make that mistake again. What is the background to that, it seems to spark up some strong feelings.

I'm just off to walk over to the beach for an IM distance sea swim ready for IM Germany on my 40th, next month.

Thanks again guys.

Julian in England.

No, the GG Park and the GG Bridge are not close to each other. There is a car park near the bridge on the SF side and you can park there and then run across the bridge. Also a nice run along the waterfront.

The frisco thing: Just paints you as a total tourist. Nothing more.

Cathy, is it not safe or a good idea to run to the bridge from Sutter? Or would it be better to get a cab to the bridge, as I wouldn't hire a car for 12 hours. How long is the bridge anyway?

You could run, but there is no direct shot. You could have a cab drop you off at Marina Green (Alcatraz finish), then run out to the bridge (part of Alcatraz course), up and across the GGB, then back to your hotel via Fillmore Street (and then you'd get the big hill from the SF Grand Prix bike race). That would be between 8-10 miles, I think. Round trip of bridge only is about 3.5 miles.

Thanks Cathy, that sounds like just the ticket, a nice little jaunt with something to remember and bring me back to "The City" for a longer stay!

With regards to Sports Basement, you're in luck. Their current store is way out of the way, but in September they're opening a new 80,000-square-foot store right in the Presidio, about half a mile from the base of the GG Bridge. It's a much better location and you could combine a Bridge run with a shopping trip if you're willing to take a cab back (which you'll need so you can carry the loads of stuff you'll buy).

There are plenty of trails in the Presidio, too, so you could easily add a few off-road miles to your Bridge run. Here's a map of the Presidio:

http://www.nps.gov/.../maps/pdf/padmap.pdf

The new Sports Basement will be in the big pink building labeled "610" on the map.

BTW, the Miyako is a nice place. My family often stays there when they visit because it's away from the din of downtown. It's about 2 miles from your hotel to the Marina. You could just run up (very steep) Fillmore all the way to the Marina, then turn left when you hit water and head toward the Bridge (about 3.5 or 4 miles to the bridge from the hotel). It's perfectly safe, but if you dislike sidewalk running, then skip the Fillmore part. Once you get to the Presidio and Crissy Field, there's a packed dirt trail that's quite nice.

As you can see, you have many options!

Julian,

There are plenty of trails in Golden Gate Park, as well as the Presidio, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area, by the bridge. The best views of the bridge are in this park. At the Miyako, you are only about a mile and a half from either park. Rufus Graphics produces an excellent biking and walking map of San Francisco that shows where all the trails go. You can contact them at (415)566-3614.

While you are in the city, come visit us at Bicycle Sports. We’re a mile and a half due south of your hotel, and despite what Cathy Morgan might tell you, it is not a bad neighborhood, and there is plenty of free parking if you know what streets to seek out. Looking forward to your visit.

Yo Eric,

I never said BS was in a BAD neighborhood, just a very bizarre spot for a bike shop.

Flying out Thursday morning!! I just spent the weekend between Squaw Valley and Auburn, crewing for my friend at the Western States 100 run. AWESOME TIME! Hotter than blazes (105F or so), but what a great group of people. I'll have to write something up about it and I'll have a few pictures.
