Finger Lakes Riding
Hi all,

We will be spending a couple of weeks in the NY Finger Lakes region. The last few times I've visited, I always thought it would be a great area to do some riding so this time I'm going to bring my road bike. Looking back on some old topic and talk around the Musselman course, I've planned out a few routes to follow. Honeoye lake will be jumping off point (due to logistics), so I came up with the following routes. Would appreciate any feedback, tricks or tips!

That should be some great rides. I'm originally from Rochester. You may want to see about riding to Letchworth state park and Watkins Glen. I know it's nice to do a complete loop around a lake but I'd look at those two locations online and see what you think.

Wow this looks awesome. Do you think it will happen?

Also are you allowed to use a tri bike or is it road bikes only?

Also, there is a local legend (strava term) that lives in the area by the name of Keith Roy. He consistently averages 1,000 mile weeks. He would be a great resource for local rides.

Races are happening in that area so if I had to bet, I'd bet yes. However, Cuomo is governor so I wouldn't bet much.

I am signed up.

Yes - you can and should use a tri-bike. Its a 3.33 mile loop and the big climb after turn 2 and then exiting the boot are the only 2 times you are not aero. All the leaders are on tri-bikes.

Its by far the most fun bike course I've raced.

One of my favorite things to do is to pick one of the bigger lakes, Canandaigua/ Seneca/ Cayuga/ Keuka, and do a circle tour around the lake. Along the way, me and whoever else is along, will stop at any and all of the wineries/ breweries/ distilleries/ meadery that we see fit. I've never had a bad time.

There is a local-famous hill on Canandaigua called Bopple Hill. You get street cred if you can make it up without needing to walk your bike. Extra cred if you don't have to snake.

I've heard of several people that have made it a challenge to bike around each of the lakes. The excellent Rochester-based race company, YellowJacket Racing, is hosting a virtual challenge, Summer Around the Finger Lakes. They just want you to do the distances, but if you're already here, it may be of interest. It seems like an interesting event.

I did this race in 2011 and it was really fun. You are aero the entire time and do not use the brakes except to slow down for dismount at transition.

Thanks for the feedback! We did Watkins Glen last year (as a hike) and yeah, it’s gorgeous. Any routes or roads in particular I should be looking at coming from Honeoye?

Best way to ride the Finger Lakes is to just go out and ride, explore, take in the sights, climb the hills, when a road look interesting take it.

So much great riding in the region. If you get near Naples stop at Monica’s Pies, get the pies, all the pies.

And Bopple isn’t that bad, just gun it and grind it, straight up

I got nothing on riding locations there, but you should go to Finger Lakes Distilling while you're there.

I would recommend taking a bike that can handle gravel. Check out some of the Durty Bikes gravel series courses. Lots of mixed surface riding available.
