Did this today and modified it because I am faster than my buddy...

3x thru
400 swim with fins (I did 500)
2x200 pull paddles (I did 250)
4x100 swim steady

Fun aerobic swim, body position has been getting better with the 100s, pretty happy with it overall!

DFRU - Detta Family Racing Unit...the kids like it and we all get out and after it...gotta keep the fam involved!

Finally starting to feel some strength in my stroke, and all the focus on my catch and pull is starting to kick in. Tired and sore, but the clock was kind to me today for how I felt, so progress, did a lot of hard kicking too:

2x(100s@1;40/100buoy@1;40/100bk@2;00/100IM kick@2;10/100breast@2;00/200p@3;00)swims(1;24/19)buoys(1;21/17)back(1;27/26)brst(1;30/29)kicks(1;54/52)pulls(2;33/28)

Continuing over from what I didn't post last month (is that allowed?), the fast paces have maintained which I am quite happy about.

Jan 30th was 2000 yd with a mix of 100s and 50s with a new 100 PR for me of 1:18 which was actually my last 100 of the set.
The 31st I only recorded 600 slow yards as I was extremely tired in the water and needed a recovery day. Despite only recording 600 this was probably one of my longer amounts time spent in the pool as I stayed in to play around a bit, just practicing some pushes off the wall, general flotation, and a few kick sets I didn't record.
Today I got in 1800 as
200 @ 1:27,
5x100 @ 1:23-1:25
50 recovery @ 1:32
100 @ 1:20
8x50 @ 1:15-1:17
2x 50 recovery @ 1:29-1:30
6x 50 @ 1:15-1:18
3x 50 cool down @ 1:27-1:28

During my kick sets yesterday I have confirmed that my kicking is essentially useless as I was managing 25's on a 2:40/100yd pace with a strong push off the wall. I figure having a half decent (or even half bad) kick would potentially improve my swimming a bit so am thinking about making February a kick focus (actually include kick sets in workouts). Do y'all have any recommendations on an approach to improving the kick?

3600 SCY to start the month
1000 (14:31), 200IM kick
8x100 on 1:40 (1:22-4), 4x50 kick
8x50 on 60 (37-40), 4x50 kick
Pull {200 on 3:00, 2x150 on 2:15, 3x100 on 1:30}

Felt a slight strained muscle on left back, so didn’t push it today. Did most breathing on right instead of usual left.

Congrats on the 100. With kicking, focus on keeping the distances shorter and the effort up. I've found kicking tends to respond better to intensity.

Kicking on your back with fins can help as well. Take it slow to give your ankles time to adapt.

Hope that helps.

I never post in these threads, because I only swim masters and feel like I'm stealing someone eles's IP by posting their workouts.

BUT

Today one of my lane mates told me my stroke reminds them of Ian Thorpe, and I couldn't be more chuffed. If anyone would appreciate that, I thought the Slowtwitch-fishes would.

Always funny when I see old footage of Thorpe in his full body suit, I think they just had no idea when he first starting using it how much of an advantage it really was. And not sure even later on they got it, otherwise why didnt we see everyone in those suits?

Was going to have a miss today, but thought just get in and do something easy and long, then came around and felt ok:

3x100s@1;40(1;27/25/20)2x100IM kick@2;10(1;57/53)

5 days in a row, 17+k for the week, best in a very long time. And starting to feel faster in the water too, especially my backstroke. Been putting in a lot more yardage looking up, and it is paying off. Goal is to be able to do an easy 1;24+ in my 400IM, which sets up my best 2nd half.

25x50@;50, 3swim/1back--swims/buoys(41 to 39's) back(44/41/41/40+/40/39+)
8x75@1;30 as 2 IM/2pull-- IM's(1;03/03/01/00)pulls(53/52/52/49)2x100IM kick@2;00(1;51/1;47)

An easy get back in the water swim after missing swims for > week due to aero testing in the field.

1150 warm up mix of free, stroke, kicking with fins

4x(4x75 + 50k w/ board)
rd 1 was 25stroke/50s
rd 2 was 25k/50s
rd 3 & 4 were descend 1-4 everything was on the 1:15 managed to rip off a few :48s and :49s for the faster 75s.
Also felt good to be hanging with or out swimming some of the pro triathletes that were a few lanes over.

then did another 300 fins mix of stroke and kicking 100 ez and got out.
3100 out of the water 61 minutes after I got in. felt good to be back in

Pretty boss main set there Sean, if I can work up to the endurance needed, may give it a go in the next month or so. Thanks for putting it up there:

So today was one of those will see when I get up days, and things were still attached where they should be, and I was not coughing or sniffling, so no excuse really not to go and do #6 in a row.. Always feel sluggish, but soon as the first few 100 are done, start to feel pretty good, so did some hard stroke stuff today:

2x(500buoy/pull@7;30/7;00(7;16/6;18)200IM kick@4;30(3;56/3;46)8x50, odds buoy/evens IM order@1;00 first set, 1;10/1;20 2nd) buoys first(39's)2nd set(36+'s) Flys(36/33+)back(39+/38)brst(41/40)free(33/31+) 300Frog(5;25)
4x100p@1;40(1;18/15/12/06)2x100frog (1;48/46)
3100SCY in 60 minutes

Strokes starting to feel pretty good, but no endurance whatsoever in my fly. End of 50's feels like end of a 200, so goal for next week is to fly to the moon!

Been attempting to add some kicking to my workouts now. The only problem is every 25 of kicking feels like an all out effort 25 and leaves me wanting more air by the time my next set starts. However, there has been some quick improvement with just the constant focus on the kick and I can now kick a 25 yd at 2:00/100yd pace. Faster, but still a long way to go. Now it's time for me to go sit on my ankles...

Feb 2nd. 900 yd swimming, can't remember how much kicking as my watch doesn't record kick sets (would be nice if it did)
Feb 3rd about 2700 yd swimming, with a group so no dedicated kick sets outside of what was included in the warmup
Feb 4th 1600 swimming as almost entirely 50s, maybe 400 kicking? ended the session with a few 50s with fins and I liked that a lot. Will plan to end all sessions of the month with solely kicking.

I am very much enjoying this swim focus but am trying to decide on what goal I want to have with it. How much time is reasonable to drop? My current PRs for 50 and 100 are 35 and 1:18. Would a 30 and 1:10 be reasonable to drop to in a few months?

AM 6000 yard squad swim
Mainset was 2 rounds of 12 x 150 on a 2:30 sendoff. Each round of 12 descended 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12
First round swam with no toys. 2nd done with paddles and pull buoy.

PM 5000 yard technique focused swim done as 50 x 100 with 10 seconds rest. Odds swim and even kick. Really focused on feeling good body position for the entire session.

I am very impressed by your yardage every time you post. How many hours in the pool is that for today alone?

A lot of work weighing on my mind today so only did 1100 swimming no kick. But also decided it would be a nice to have a new PR to make my day. So after a couple moderate 100s I threw in one at 1:13.5 to set a new PR by 4.5 seconds :).
