Exercise Induced Asthma

Anyone one ever been diagnosed with exercise induced asthma? I had a biking accident in November. Broke a rib and left collarbone. Had surgery to repair my collarbone with screws and a plate. Hardware was taken out in March. Ever since the accident, when I run, I'm out of breathe and have a high heart rate after only a few minutes. Doesn't matter how fast or slow I run - it's always the same. Always feels like I'm doing hill intervals. Most I can run at a time is about 5-15 minutes before needing to walk to recover. Biking and swimming aren't as bad. Anyone have any similar experiences? I've had my heart and lungs checked and they're fine. I'm not convinced it's exercise induce asthma. Thanks!

Id say two things...I am also not a medical professional but have exercise induced asthma.

You got out of shape from the injury/recovery. Simple as that
OR
you have a bit of a panic/PTSD moment from the crash when you start to exercise.

If you went to the doc and they did the spirometer or whatever the thing is you breath into at rest and then a 10 min jog and breath again - and they say you have it - you probably have it. I was 29 and went after I could not recover from a 5k and my out of shape buddies could. Turns out after a 10 min basically walk my capacity to take in air was HALF of what it was at rest. Doc was amazed I could not feel it and said I was essentially having an asthma attack during and after each race. Also turns out I am allergic to basically everything except golf course grass and some type of oak tree.

I don't notice a difference with the inhaler running or biking but I absolutely notice it while swimming - the chlorine used to make me cough like a fresh bong rip but now it doesn't bug me at all.

real simple check - borrow someone's albuterol inhaler and try it. Two puffs, inhale each deeply and hold breath as long as possible. Run.

IF that helps, it's EIA. If it doesn't help, something else is going on.
There are many possibilities, see

Another test that I found helpful is a peak flow meter.
The EIA was measurable - Normal for me is now 600-650, if I try to run without using an inhaler first it will be 450-500.

i believe one of the hallmarks of EIA is an audible wheezing sound. In my case, HR tends to drop a bit when I have an attack. I generally feel like crap the next day with a lot of congestion and coughing. It is often triggered by something like cold or smoke or dust.

I'm sort of wondering if you have something else going on. I have zero medical knowledge. Maybe a stress echo if it's not resolving?

As has been alluded to, if you are not experiencing wheeze then it is hard to define it as asthma.
The other thing to take issue with...."I've had my heart and lungs checked and they're fine...". I am a medical doctor and a specialist and the amount of times I hear comments like this in relation to various conditions is amazing. Who checked your heart and lungs? Was it a family doctor? Was it a respiratory specialist? Was it a cardiologist? Have you had an ENT assessment? Doctors have expertise in certain areas and tend to therefore have cognitive bias in terms of potential diagnoses. You can't actually say your heart and lungs are normal unless you have been properly assessed by various specialties. Bizarrely enough I have had patients recently who have been diagnosed as "asthma" end up actually having a condition called subglottic stenosis. I am definitely NOT saying you have that, but all sorts of things can cause your symptoms and it may not be readily apparent to the likes of your family doctor.

I've been to a cardiologist - had EKG, echocardiogram and stress test. Went to a pulmonologist this week and he isn't sure about the EIA, but he's starting there. I went through 3 different breathing tests. Other than one of the tests showing I might have some fluid around my lungs, I passed the tests with flying colors. Doc gave me an inhaler to try before I run. It has helped some, but I've only run twice this week. I don have some of the symptoms of EIA, but I would imagine everyone has one of the symptoms. I do not wheeze, cough or have a period 5-10 minutes after I'm done running where I'm short of breath or have trouble breathing. This started immediately after my bike accident. I've been trying to get a CT scan of my chest, but my insurance keeps denying it. I had a couple xrays this week and have given the results yet. Thanks for the reply.
