Duathlon Worlds Smack Talk and/or Roll Call
Quote | Reply
Anybody heading down to North Carolina for Du Worlds next Saturday? For those of you that don't like swimming--this is our Kona. And I will go all Chrissie Wellington on the entire field (multisport is one of the only places where competing like a girl is the goal).

I will eat each and every one of you for breakfast before the race (your livers will taste delicious with fava beans and a nice chianti) then throw you back up during T2 because no part of you should be close to me at the finish line.

Ridiculous smack talk encouraged, even if you're one of those fancy schmancy tri-athletes.

This isn't a thread about TigerChik, so I totally expect less than 10,000 page views. Maybe if I started a thread like that, I could get a ton of replies =)

Pulled up lame 2 days ago but if nobody shoots me to put me out of my misery over the next week I'll be there racing or not. I suppose on the bright side this gives me a ready made excuse for a suck ass performance if I'm able to race so no matter how bad I do it will be considered a victory to be adored and admired. I can already visualize the purple hordes lining up the finish line to atta boy me as I limp in with a 4 hour finish after doing an hour walk of the final 5K.

So put that in your smack talk pipe & smoke it!

Your underestimation-fu is strong jsquared. However, I will not fall for your deceitful games. When you crank out a 31-minute 10k, you will get hordes---they will not be purple though, they will be filled with hot chicks.

Cause hot chicks dig duathlon. Seriously though, I hope things clear up as soon as possible and you feel better. Think of it as an extended taper for an extended race-day ass-kicking :)

A certain fatass who also happens to run a little known slugfest race in the Catskills claims he's gonna kill it. We'll see.

As for me...I'm on the Speedway tour program...

Thankfully, my Team USA stuff just arrived yesterday....They forgot the free 51cm P4 that I requested...not sure why that is....

When I crank out a 31 minute 10K the officials will be booting my ass back out on the course for a second lap. But I'm all with you on that extended taper thing.

I am in.
Looking at the course, there are no hills, and lots of turns...
May turn into a group ride.

You sure about the no hills thing? Has anyone actually ridden the course? Can anyone give a real life estimate of the grades on the climbs? I did a download of the USGS topological map of the area and it showed some decent grades but the map doesn't do a good job of telling you if cutting the roads significantly lowered the grades.

Note CALICAROL's response which I've copied below from Kristin Villopoto, former Age Group Duathlon World Champion:

"I did a TT at Lowes Speedway this month. There are tunnels getting into and out of the track/stadium that go fairly deep down, so where you see the course leaving the stadium, note that there are hills there both ways."

"I think what they are showing as the inside the track loop on the bike is part of a rolling motorcycle course that we warmed down on, so that part will not be pancake flat."

"I am also guessing that part of the inside loop of the run course is on the go-cart course, which did look more flat to false-flat."

"On the main track itself, it also is not perfectly flat. Going up one way from the starting line at Pit Rd., is proubably 1-2 shifts different from coming down the back straight-away. And wind there can swirl to make the changes more dramamtic."

"Outside the stadium, I did not get a chance to see the rest of the course, but that area in general has only gentle rollers if anything."

If the fatass (not my term but I like it) is doing Worlds, they're going to have to increase the draft zone. That guy's got a slipstream for days :)

People compliment it all the time, but American Zofingen is a piece of crap race. From what I saw, it's just an excuse for a bunch of guys to get together, bond over fall foliage, and lose their inhibitions in the hot tub the night before.

with all due respect, for those who don't like swimming, "our Kona" is on Oct 11 in New Palz, NY. this world's thing is an annoying sprinty thing where teh young whippersnappers can wipe out the hardened older folk.

i'll be flying on a redeye from portland, OR, getting in saturday AM to watch my wife race. no pressure on her, she was only the usat masters duathlete 2009 :) in the F40-44 age range, also look out for kristin kuss of delaware. there's almost no question who will win the women's race overall; sue huelster is so fast that almost nobody can touch her (though someone came remarkably close at nationals). when they didn't let her race the last world's du as a pro, she promptly went and beat all the pro times by enough of a margin that nobody could really argue about the "its a different race" stuff.

let me know what abuse you want hurled at you and a race number - i'm just spectating and will be happy to motivate your sorry ass self as best i can :)

A link to the Duathlon.com forums? That place is about as useful as the comments on my blog and I disabled them.

The course maps look like they're designed by a person with a phobia of straight lines.

Nevertheless, the New Paltz gig's plankholder will toe the line in Charlotte a this little sprinty thing. He claims some swedish doodes hurt him into some sort of shape and he's going to bring the pain to the young whippersnappers.

That is so awesome about your wife! I hope she kills it and completes the total emasculation of her spectating husband :)

I have enough motivation as it is from people yelling. Things I hear all the time: "Sexy!" "Have my babies!" "You are an amazing lover!" My imaginary friends are all beautiful women and they can be rather loud.

Fatass just did 3 x 5K on the road, 19:01, 19:01 and 19:01. Can't get more even than that! With warmup, warmdown and jogging rest intervals, 14.1 miles total, on still blistered feet from SOS on Sunday. Oh yeah, fatass rocked the bike Sunday, winning the prime and just missing the course record. Bring on the old euro dudes!

Hey! You can call me fat, but don't diss my race. BTW, Josh Beck just confirmed he's returning so with him, last year's champ Alex Lamberix, Justin Harris and Dereck Treadwell, the LC is going to be stupid fast.

I've raced at Lowes around 25 times. That's a very technical-looking bike course they've made for y'all. You won't encounter many hills, but there certainly are a few. I can see three that I know of. It looks to me like, leaving transition, you'll head out through the tunnel and leave the track right away. After you reach the stop sign after the tunnel and make a left, there's bit of a hill right there as you head up to go around the north end of the track. Then you'll be on the access road around the track. After you pass the museum and start heading off to the southwest, that little road will get VERY technical and perhaps dangerous if you're not careful. It has a number of tight little curves to the left and right as it winds through in the shadows of the Lowes grandstand. Then the course goes out on the main roads for a while. I can't comment on much of that. It also crosses the main road and heads for the new drag strip and dirt track. All that is new. I'm guessing it's mostly pretty flat, but with a ton of turns. When you cross back to the side of the road where the main track is and start heading back into the track, I think you'll be hitting a pretty significant hill there that leads right up to the tunnel and the entrance to the track. Back inside the track, you make a loop of the "practice track." You'll have a short, sharp hill at the south end of that track. Then you'll head out onto the main track for almost a full lap. The track is not flat. Where you enter the track you'll be going uphill through the turn at the south end. It's not a big deal. It's just that you're gonna feel like you should be going a lot faster than you'll actually be able to. Don't worry. When you come out of that turn, the backstretch is a slight downhill and it's VERY fast. Enjoy. But be aware that there are two very sharp bumps in the back stretch. As long as you know they're there (and if you get a chance to take a practice lap or two and hit them at full speed), you should be fine. There's also one bump in the turn at the north end. Going into that turn, you'll feel the slight uphill grade start to dig pretty quickly and it'll stay with you until you leave the track and head toward the transition area. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I'd say the course should be a whole lot of fun if it isn't too crowded. If it's crowded at all, there are parts of it that are going to be ridiculous ... the area just outside the track near the grandstand on the west side, in particular.

FWIW,
.

Dave,

I'm coming as well. USAT asked me to come in the capacity of coach (which means more like manager) and I'm honored to do it. Jarrod Shoemaker and Chris Foster are on target to be present as well as some other solid US elites. We should have a strong showing. I'm stoked about the race track and will bring my Break Away on the plane ($15 in baggage) in hopes to get a lap around what I hope is just an enormous velodrome!!

Hope we cross paths.

Topo map I was looking at had the course due west of the track crossing a 650 and a 600 line in only 5 or 600 feet. That's 8/10 percent even if it's not that long of a climb.

Hey John,
hope you're resting up and ready to go for next weekend. My run isn't quite where I wish it was but is fair. I am peaking on the bike though. Just had the fastest overall age group bike split at Malibu Olympic last weekend so I'm ready to go there.

That is an amazing course description, just printed it out. I've joked a good bit on this thread, but thanks so much!

I really appreciate the reply, even if it was longer than Atlas Shrugged, and with less sex scenes :)

That is awesome Ian! I'd love to meet with you at some point and talk shop a little. To be serious for a second, thanks for doing the coaching and supporting the event/athletes.

"Hope we cross paths."

Just a warning: my path is littered with the breadcrumbs of children and the blood of innocents. Those two may or may not be related.
