Doing a cycling/tri roadtrip in CA and Oregon, give me route feedback!
During my pro triathlon days I always enjoyed training in California and especially up at Dan´s and Marks place, Slowtwitch HQ! I always wanted to a longer type training camp, preferably going from point A to B moving forward.

I´m coaching up n´coming Swedish pro Alexander Berggren who some might remember seeing on the IM Florida course last weekend, leading the swim and 15-20 miles of the bike. He´s only a first-year pro and two years in triathlon so he´s super enthusiastic about any and all training camp ideas. This camp is something we´ve talked about over the past few months and now we´re deep into planning. Initially we toyed with the idea of going coast to coast (inspired by the trip Gordo Byrn and Clas Björling did in 2004...) but we figured it´s a tad to long to be gone from home and also not the most fun when it comes to scenery and such. Riding up through CA and Oregon though will provide plenty of nice scenery, climbing and adventures as well as great trail running!
The reason we end in Portland is that there´s where my brother lives so it´s a good place to end this camp.

We´ll have a support car and a U-Haul for luggage and stuff and will stay in hotels at each location. Alex dad has promised to drive:) We´ll probably have a few other Swedish triathletes join us and help us split the costs for logistics.

This is the route I´ve plotted. I´ve done my best to avoid gravel roads but also to stay away from large urban areas with to much traffic. We´ve chosen to have a bike free day every four or so days so we can get some nice running and swimming in as well. My experience from having done a bunch of longer bike tours like this is that too many long days in a row turn great training into survival mode training and misery.

Feel free to comment on the route and our stage destinations! Tips on swimming and running is also appreciated!

Thanks
Jonas

I had a look earlier and it just dawned on me that if we have a winter like last year, some of those roads will be closed, or at the very least, full of ice and snow. The way the winter is starting out here, seems like another drought year, but mid April could still be bad at anything over 6500ft. Maybe take a look at any routes that high, and see about alternate ones, just in case...

yeah, good point, we´ll have to keep track of how your California winter plays out.

Forgot to add, really pumped to have you guys up here for a couple days, if Jackson lake is still snowed in, there is always the Punchbowl for a great single track run. And after the 100/100's, me and dan may even run with your group!! I will definitely be swimming with you, I will start training now for a bit two day bloc... (-;

Unless it's an abysmal snow year the roads won't be open through Yosemite. Access through Eastern Gate (which drops to Lee Vining) typically opens around Memorial Day.

Agreed. Nearly zero chance Tioga Pass is open in April. Here are the historical open dates:

Sounds like you can plan last minute changes, so yes, we will watch the winter here, but some of your route is probably not going to be accessible. I would look at after coming up here, going up and cutting over to maybe where the Wildflower triathlon is held, Lake San Antonio and Naciemento. There is a very old road that cuts over the mountain there, right to the coast to the south end of the Big Sur area. From there are some of the great rides up the coast, and/or you can head inland and ride up the middle through Oregon. But at least you won't have to worry about snow roads and closures.

Assuming you don't need route advice for the last day in Portland given your brother lives here, but if happens to be a chill ride being the end, I'd be happy to get some of the local tri scene out for a group ride.

You do remember that ride from San Diego to the top of the mountain and Dan had to come rescue you, yes? Or when you ran back from the Punchbowl...in the winter storm? :-)

Just a quick look at your Oregon route. You are on major highways almost the entire time. Unfortunately the main north-south roads are all 2 lane state highways. Many trucks, not the greatest road conditions, maybe an ok shoulder to ride in some places. Plan on lots of debris in the shoulders though. I wouldn't ride that route, just wouldn't be enjoyable.

Have you looked at the route the CA aids ride takes? It is mostly away from heavy traffic (I would modify it to avoid LA and SF).

Pros:
Coastal moderate temps - no snow
Better scenery for the time of year
Access to the ocean for ocean swims (there are OWS groups up and down the coast you could drop in with)
Ocean swims are awesome for toasted legs
Rain on the coast can generally be ridden in if you must
Like Monty said, Wildflower
The coastal communities have tons of lap pools

Cons:
Low elevation (for training)
You’d need to cut laterally to avoid the Bay Area or keep to HWY1 for that segment (which is congested)
No sweeping views of the snow covered sierras.
There are fewer big climb opportunities, though the coast is hardly flat
Hotels are generally more expensive

Good luck....

I probably ridden just about every road & back in Oregon in last 38 yrs. I've am only the only woman & 1/5 of us who have ridden all of the week long Cycle Oregon bicycle rides which try to avoid major highways and highlight great cycling roads. Your planned trip through Oregon will get you from point A - B but there are some better alternative roads for cycling that would be better. Like going through Butte Falls vs around via Shady Cove.
Highway 97 is the heaviest traveled in the state. All full of truck traffic going way to fast. It's unpleasant.
Last day from Astoria to PDX Highway 30 (known as dirty 30) is unpleasant compared to the alternative. Last time I did it starting the 1st day of an organized ride across country said never again. I've done a nicer alternative than 30 many times as long 1 day training ride. Much nicer to go south from Astoria then over to Jewel & Mist towards PDX. Depending on where you want to go into Portland area, one can get on the Banks Vernonia Trail or over to Scappose & then onto 30 into town.
