Disconfort in effort and heart rate

These months I am focused on running but I dont own a pulsometer and I am not going to buy one...
Someone around here training without one? How do you deal with that? I mean, when I am doing some training I dont check my heartbeat neither look at my watch to calculate, just follow my instinct...do you know any trick to train within 60-70% and 70-85% of max. rate?
One more thing....how do you feel about the effort training and racing? I am not a kid already, i am 40, and my brain just disconnect when I must do extreme efforts...i.just follow my pace which I think it is the most healthy thing to do..but,..somebody knows the heart rate for a 10k race to not finish cooked and dragging? I just see so many people running like chickens at the start and slowing down 10m later. I always try to run finishing strong...

I just use the timer on my watch to keep track of how fast I am doing quarter mile or mile repeats.
