Denver-area specialist for possible stress fracture in foot
Quote | Reply
I developed a pretty severe pain after a hard long run on Saturday. I rode 85 miles Sunday with no pain and took Monday completely off. I ran 5 easy miles yesterday afternoon and at about 1 mile it, the pain came back. I tightened up my shoes (altra escalante; I generally run in very loose shoes) and finished the run with only minor pain. I woke up this morning and could barely walk without shoes. I'm thinking it could be a stress fracture, but I'm hoping it's something that requires less off-time. I have a race in December, so hopefully I'll be good by then, but I've been really progressing for the past month so this kind of hurts.

Should I go see a specialist? Or should I just not run for a week and double up on my swim/bike/strength work? If a specialist, anyone have a suggestion for one in Denver/Boulder?

My go to is Dr. Jason Glowney, who is a non-operating Ortho / Sports Med doc. He's a knowledgeable dude, former coach with Vision Quest out of Chicago and a strong endurance athlete, which means he understands from the mindset of an athlete.

He's at the CU Sports Medicine center adjacent to the CU Football stadium in Boulder.

The orthopedist I used for my clavicle fracture in Denver is Dr. Michael Hewitt. He is on the east side. Dude is a seriously talented trail runner and also gets the "athlete mindset", like the first recommendation. Agree, likely not stress fracture, tons of other reasons you could have foot pain. Where in your foot? If you notice it a ton in the morning, and its in the arch/heel, maybe plantar fascia?

It's on the outside of my right foot, half-way between my heel and toes. On this diagram, the pain is exactly where it says "mid-shaft." The pain is dull-ish, kind of like a bruise.

I second the recommendation of Dr. Glowney. He definitely understands the athlete mindset, and worked with me to get me back training months before a traditional orthopedist said I could.

Just a piece of information, he is no longer at the CU Sports Medicine Facility, he recently opened his own practice called Boulder Biologics.
