December riding vacation - ideas?
"use them or lose them" (by Dec 31) vacation day situation, so looking to go somewhere for 8 or so days mid-December to ride.

At least moderately warm (high 50's or more), and smallish chance of rain. If I stay in the US it would likely by Tucson. Did that last December and it worked out well, not too expensive.

Other ideas? Southern Spain (like Malaga / Marbella or somewhere like that)? Southern Italy somewhere? (no ideas) Canary Islands? Any others?

Maui maybe? West Maui Loop (best ride in HI) one day, Haleakala with 10k of climbing another, and a day out to Hana, stay there, a day back... then some shorter rides around Wailea and Lahaina. It'll still be in the 80s here, with slightly more rain in December than in summer but still likely to be sunny and clear.

We did Tucson last December and had fun. Mallorca could work (haven't been there myself but it's on the list). Where else do all the pros go in the off season? Girona?

I have a buddy I rode with a couple of months ago in Marbella. Incredible riding and he's ridden with some Tour riders often. Rode up to one of the "white villages for a great cup of expresso. He has lived a LOT of places including some years in Kona. He says Marbella is the best he's ever done, and I'm sure he'd be very helpful in showing you some courses. He also has just opened an awesome Mexican restaurant there.

I can ut you in touch if you'd like, but from what I have seen, an awesome spot, great climate and very inexpensive food, etc.

Never even considered Hawaii, but that's an interesting idea, thanks.

That's awesome, thanks for the tip. I'd also heard -- can't remember from whom now -- that Marbella is really nice. If I decide on that will send you a PM ... most appreciated.

I have been to Calpe in December. The Astana and Katusha team were in our hotel. Nice riding and easy to get to.
Last year before Christmas I was in Mallorca. The Sky guys were there. Nice riding but it was the off season for tourism so pretty dead everywhere.

Palm Springs is very nice in December, just ask the 300k Canadians that move there every winter!! Lots of cycling going on, teams come in, and there is a vibrant local group with rides almost everyday at sometime. But Hawaii would be a lot warmer of course, that's where I would go if I were flying..

I'm sure he'd love to help out. He's ridden with Froome, and a number of the tour guys. In fact, he loves the riding so much he's turning into a roadie! ;-) We rode up to a village and filled water bottles from the stream than runs through the village.....so incredible. I absolutely loved Spain, and that area was amazing. We also hit Malaga and Cadiz in addition to Madrid ( my GF grew up in the south of Spain), so if you need any info, let me know. I would go there in minute, especially as the food was amazing at such a low price and AirBnB was inexpensive and awesome .

This Marbella sounds pretty awesome.

But I'd also put in another vote for Maui, I spent a week there on vacation with my wife a few years ago, and turned it into a mini training camp, awesome riding in the morning, while she did some thing she wanted to do (snorkeling etc..) sitting at the beach all afternoon.
One note food and lodging is on the high side, but it's beautiful.

Hawaii has a lot of nice spots, but I have yet to find very good and reasonable food. The best food I've had in many trips there was the meals I cooked and eating out is crazy $$. Roads are also not as cycling friendly IMO. Spain was so inexpensive once there and the food was gourmet every day and 3 course meals for so little cost. There's good reason that many tour riders are there.

I would second Palm Springs / La Quinta

area for being great for December training. Group rides most every day and several options for long rides.

If your going to Hawaii, Kona is more cycling friendly than Maui.

Australia.

Noosa. It’s full of triathletes.

Or

Bright in Victoria Australia. Hills. And more hills. Cyclists everywhere.
