Dawn Patrol/Pre-Dawn Patrol
I kinda need a ruling on this, for my own sake

I left the house for my run at 6:20AM
Sunrise today was 6:28
I got back to the house just after 7:00

Clearly, Dawn Patrol since the sun came up while I was on the road, but what qualifies as PRE-Dawn? The whole affair is to be completed before the sun rises. or just getting OUT before sunrise?

Your thoughts would be appreciated

And to the Super-Early Birds: I apologize for sleeping so late

If the sun comes up at any point during your activity, it's dawn patrol.

I've only ever heard this in the context of backcountry ski touring (Where's it's a common usage). Never heard the use in other sports.

Agreed.

So, Pre-Dawn means the entire activity must be done before sun comes up?

Like it will be in the October, before we switch the clocks again, when the sun doesn't come up until almost 7:30

Thanks, everyone; we now have a protocol

I've heard this term used quite a bit in surfing circles.

Dawn patrol is also used in golf for the first 1-3 tee times of the day. First chair for resort skiing.

In the Usher/ Lilā€™ John song ā€œYeahā€ Ludacris says ā€œif they ainā€™t cutting, then Iā€™ll put ā€˜em on foot patrolā€.

Is that related?

I loved running super early when I was training for IM. Would get up at 5 and head out, depending on the time of year it might be dawn by the time Iā€™d get home. My usual route took me past a pair of bakeries, and the smell alone when passing by was worth getting up early for.

Great shot. Is that along the South Shore?

Thanks. Yes, Jerusalem Road in Cohasset. One of my favorite spots to ride.

A true dawn patrol in the surf world is to be paddling out as soon as you can see anything. It's dark, the water is really moving, you can hear it and feel it but you have no idea just how big it is - the adrenaline is pumping and you're ready to get worked. But no matter how early you think you are there's always some grizzled local who got there before you. So unless you're back drinking coffee when the sun comes up it ain't a dawn patrol.

I was thinking Cohasset, been a while since I have been on that stretch but agree it is a great spot.

Another - and earlier - perspective, thanks

I didn't start running in the morning until our daughter was born over here in Jersey, but there are plenty of morning places in Philly I missed out on; I got the nighttime food trucks at UPenn , pizza joints and bars

I don't even have a Dunkin Donuts or Wawa near enough to me to run past in the morning

Swimmers call the workout before the sun comes out the "morning workout," and the swim later in the day the "afternoon workout."

Thanks to the joys of being a crew parent I was a 5am Kelly Drive runner for a couple of years, usually back in my car napping outside Penn AC right when the sun was coming up.

"Dawn patrol" was always a term I associated with surfing too (or a "dawnie" as the Aussies shorten it to like they do with everything), meaning being in the water before the sun came up.

"Pre-Dawn Patrol" would be anything Night Ranger did prior to their debut album...

Ski touring with a headlamp sure, but if chairs are spinning it is waaaay past dawn patrol.

Interesting article on the perceived benefits of working out in the morning vs. evening (with lots of charts, if you're into that sort of thing)
