Very sad. Basically a road rage incident. Glad the cops took care of the killer.

Looks like they had some history, if the victim knew the shooter.
But that isn’t the first and won’t be the last time in our egotistical society and guns to everyone’s disposal.
Counting everyday on somebody deliberately running me down or pulling a gun out there.
If anything gets me to take up indoors riding, it’s feeling not only more susceptible, but outright threatened every time I clip in.

There are some stunning cycling roads in east King and Snohomish county (east and northeast of Seattle). I used to ride them when I was young and reckless and didn't have a family to think about. Rolling hills, blind corners, small shoulders, great training and stunning scenery. Buuuut it just takes one distracted driver or one with rage against cyclists. Overwhelming majority of people are kind let's not forget that. But it just takes one.

...not the cars versus cyclists parts........the folks murdering people in public they have a minor disagreement with part......may make me want to leave this country someday. I love the US, I'd fight to protect yours and mine alike. But this shit is ridiculous.

For about a year in 2018 or so I had to drive to Greenville and stay a week at a time IN THAT EXACT little neighborhood and ride that EXACT street to and from Fluor Enterprises.

I heard the name of the neighborhood and thought it sounded familiar.

That kind of link to the victim just brings it home. This kind of thing disgusts me to the core.

I love the US, I love my country. I'd fight for you and I. But this shit of the risk of dying because people are so triggered and self righteous they'll murder over jaywalking or an interaction on the road is getting ludicrous.

Also, this isn't some "in the boonies" or hills part of town. It isn't a gang haven of any kind. It's suburbia.

This is my home town and this was in a very nice neighborhood in front of a very nice park. I've run there lots of times and wouldn't hesitate to run or ride in that area in the dark. The cyclist Whitt lived in that neighborhood and the suspect lived several miles away but was at that park often. It is unheard of to have a shooting there. It seems the suspect had conflicts quite often in that park with the other neighbors there. The suspect was obviously off his rocker in some way and seems to have been a ticking time bomb. What happened seems completely senseless. Whitt was on the phone with 911 to report harassment when he was shot in the back 10 times. This isn't really a typical road rage incident since that neighborhood and park sees runners and bikers all the time and the road they were on is really parallel parking for the park itself, not a thoroughfare . It seems to me it was just a crazy, angry guy with a gun and there is no making sense of it. It's still terribly sad and would make me think twice about how a deal with people who seem to want conflict.

I arrived in Greenville, SC late on Sunday night to stay for a week and search for apartments as I'm planning to move here in June. Great timing to see this news...
