And no, the swims were not cancelled, well, apparently the 11th out of 13 was. Just found out. Plus slow teams were not allowed to tackle 12 and 13

Fabulous photos.
All triathlons should have swims like that 😁

It's because they are allowed to wear shoes during the swim it really helps a lot... /pink

Why are they allowed to use paddles and floaties?

For one they are attached to each other, for two the conditions are rough and for three so they don't drown, plus they are in shoes. I really don't know the real answer.. just my guesses, I am also curious.

Because you swim with shoes - paddles and buoys are allowed but not required. Also with so much running wrapped around the swims folks try to save their legs for running. :-)

Is the tether mandatory or optional? The rules make it sound like an option, at least to me... at first glance. The concept of swimrun is really appealing to me but the idea of being leashed to my teammate is not.

Is it a requirement to wear your shoes or do they just do it because it is easier and faster?

Taking your shoes off and storing them while swimming and then putting them back in is a nightmare time wise - plus you want to run in and out of the water and not walk gingerly to avoid rocks, shells, roots etc

I spent a semester living and studying in Malta during my college years. It’s been 14 years since I was there, very cool to see some great photos from around the island

That looks like the most fun ever. The Kauai crew I hung around with way back in the day would have excelled at that since swimming in ridiculous conditions and doing the rock hop to retrieve a surfboard was a required skill.

There are great such events in the USA too. Ödyssey Casco Bay with amazing ocean swimming, SwimRun Lake James in early April with lots of lake swimming and island hopping. Ödyssey Orcas Island in September is more run heavy but stunningly beautiful. Our SwimRun NC race the last Sunday in October is also run heavy but very vertical with very cool waterfalls, plus several others including ÖtillÖ Catalina in February and Ödyssey Les Cheneaux Islands in Michigan that is very swim heavy.
