One of the great milestone achievements in life. Congratulations!

If you haven't been through one of these, you might be surprised to hear that as events go, most final defenses are a bit anticlimactic as compared to the several years of work that led up to them. Unless there are unexpected and contentious results presented they usually go smoothly, although even if they do go well, the stress level for everyone I know that has gone through this (me included) was still off the charts.

Congratulations Jodi!!

my program doesn't do ph.d. defenses, you just have to get your committee to sign off on it. filing my dissertation and accompanying paperwork was memorable only for just how amazingly anticlimactic it was.

but congrats to jodi! peanut m&ms all around!

BTW Paulo, Jodi is tapering in my area next month. Is it OK for me to "sponsor" her for a 60-90 minute session with my massage therapist (as a congrats present) or will that screw up the taper. Wanted to check with you first.....

It's funny that it's only in math and physics circles that people brag about writing stuff in LaTeX. I guess they see it as an accomplisment... ;-)

Anyway, to answer an early question, Jodi's doing a combined MD-PhD program, so she's still got a long way to go until she's out of school!

I prefer \textsf. Also there is a package you can load (can't remember the name right now) that gets you a font called concrete. Very cool.

I have been a total stress case the past 2 weeks, as Paulo can attest to. Yesterday I spent the day alternating between feeling good, and total and utter meltdown. Thankfully I got over my breakdowns before today! The defense went really well. It was a 1 hour seminar in front of the department and friends followed by 1 hour where I got drilled by my committee. We had about 100 people attend, so it was really a good turnout. I think a small handful even stayed awake...

My field is Pharmacology and I studied antibiotic resistance (Augmentin in particular). Really nitty gritty Biochemistry. My parents were very proud, especially my mom who kept commenting that I speak in an entirely different language in front of my science nerd peers! I warned her to bring a crossword puzzle.

Now it's off to have margaritas with my parents and my mentor and his wife. Then I have to get to bed early because I have to get up at 4am for my 8 hour workout tomorrow. I love this stuff!

did you get a lot of/any training in in your final year before defending?

I actually didn't get started in triathlon until a year ago, and my first Ironman will be CdA. I thought I was going to defend in February, but that didn't happen. So it was really tough. I fit in the workouts fine, since my schedule is flexible, but the past month the combination of training load (18-20 hr per week) and stress really did a number on my emotional state. I'm usually pretty stable, but I have been a real mess lately. I would recommend that no one schedule stressful life events during an Ironman build phase!
