Confused on headsets, which to order
I've built quite a few bikes, but never had to bother with ordering a headset before. Google has me more confused than when I started, so posting this here and hoping for a quick, simple explanation.

I picked up a frame that's been on my bucket list forever, a 2004 Lemond Titanium/Carbon spine bike that's in beautiful condition, but missing a headset. It's a 1-1/8" steerer tube, and the head tube is 34mm ID and 37mm OD, both are straight with no taper.

The Vintage Trek site lists this as the headset specifications, which don't seem to correspond with what I have measured, unless I'm misunderstanding things.
"Headset . . . . . . . . . Cane Creek S-2 Aheadset, alloy 25.4/34.0/30.0, 26.5 mm stack height" Am I overthinking this, and pretty much any 1-1/8" threadless EC headset will work? Or do I need to order based on ID and OD of the head tube? This is one place where even Park Tool's site hasn't been much help, lol.

This datasheet from Cane Creek is a really good resource for headset ID, but short answer is yes, you just need a "standard" press fit external cup 1/18" threadless headset.

Thanks, going back from Cane Creek to FSA to Amazon to Ebay to the Trek site had me all confused...figued I was just overcomplicating a simple problem.

The bike's just going to be for recreational touring rides, no racing or anything competitive, so just wanted a simple, inexpensive, fairly reliable unit.

You can get an FSA Orbit MX for as little as $35 bucks if you shop around, I've had those on a couple of bikes over the years and they've done everything I needed a headset to do.

Strangely enough, that's what I wound up ordering. Found one on Ebay for ~$18 shipped, and figured even if it doesn't work, it'll be great in the spares box, lol.
