Just looking for something more comfortable to run in than running shorts when the hot weather arrives. Have kit for races so not wanting to spend a lot.

I've been using unpadded compression shorts for the last 18 months on the trainer and I'm finding them more comfortable than padded on the bike. Of course outdoors there's bumps and rough roads might make you miss the pad but I've done a few shorter outdoor rides without and not been harmed!
I've used a few types but mostly old Skins A400 shorts and more recently Skins DNAmic shorts bought half price on sale.

De Soto Sport Carrera Shorts. Not cheap, but less expensive and last a long time.

Check out the SLS3 tri shorts on amazon. Really nice product for the price.

Sailfish comp range comes in at a good price with minimal padding,Side netting is also good for gels and stuff on longer runs, not the best for biking tough
There's nothing more comfortable to run in other than shorts. Just wear compression shorts or performance boxer briefs under them.
