Cannondale Slate - Rear Rack that fits?
I got a 2017 Slate on clearance with the intent of adding a rack and pannier on it for commuting on some days. I've tried two different rear cargo racks, and neither seem to fit, though. Has anyone tried one that does work?

So far, I've tried: the Blackburn EX-1 and the Topeak Explorer MTX with Disc Mounts.

I know a few Slowtwitchers have Slates, so I thought someone may have already tied.

What was the issue with the racks you tried? Clearing the disk?

Could you fit what you typically commute with in a frame bag?

Sorry I cant help with your specific question but I hope others chime in because I think the slates are pretty cool rigs and would like to try touring with one.

Both had too little clearance between the mounting hole in the dropout and the strut for me to actually screw in the strut like it should go. It seems like the stylish curve going up and back is in the way. The Topeak was close, not quite.

Edit: To add that a frame bag might work, but I already got a nice pannier for my commute.

You're doing it wrong! You need a classic rack (like a jim blackburn) and it bolts from *inside* the frame. There's a flat surface there. Nothing could possibly bolt securely to the outside of this frame.

I'll photo mine later to show you. Some filing of rack (to take off a half mm) may be necessary, and to use dome headed bolts for cassette clearance. But very straightforward. Not really harder than fitting a rack to any classic MTB etc.

The wheelbase is just long enough for full size panniers not to catch heels.

What about a longer bolt and a delrin or nylon spacer?

Nice idea. Call me opinionated

But

i don't like it for the folllwing.
1 ugly solution
2 weak solution
3 dropout wasn't designed to be used that way.

Don’t necessarily disagree with any of the above. Depends how much spacer you’d need to make it work. It’s not really clear form that photo how far recessed that mount hole is.

Seeing those pics and how the dropout is designed, I withdraw my suggestion.

Interesting design, isn't it. Not particularly versatile though.

Bolting on inside looks like the way to go

The Racktime Stand-it Lite might be interesting.... They hold 25kg and dont look chunky on a race bike.... Theres other models with more crossbars on the sides or on top if thats what you are looking for

If clearance with bolt/chain/disc rotor is an issue then can also try

Carrier on inside/frame/bolt-head

Instead of

Bolt-head on inside /carrier/frame

There isn't a clearance issue, there's quite alot of space. the rack you suggested won't work because it mounts with a plate which perhaps could be filed into shape to fit the derailleur. Study the following photo. The older, thin style, fits the dropout, with a possibility of either needing to slightly enlarge the hole or file some material (0.5mm) off the bottom.

Cube makes a minimal race bike rack (can hold up to 25kg). That is on adjustable struts... It looks like this one.....
