CX Tires

Sorry if this is a bit peripheral to triathlon per se, but looking for advice on CX tires.

I have a CX bike that lately I use mostly on gravel and hardpack single track. The single track generally has a lot of large, angular, embedded rocks and roots.

Wondering how much of a “suspension” benefit moving from a 33 clincher to a 38 or 40 tubeless system I would gain. Is it worth it, or should I just be moving to an XC mtb?

Thanks.

I think it depends on how you like to ride. 38s with lower pressure will be a little more cushy than 33s. A lot cheaper than going to a hard tail, but it's good to have both. I have similar terrain I ride with both a CX bike and hard tail MTB, depending on what I feel like on any given day. I'm building up an Open New U.P. with Challenge Gravel Race 38s, should hit the sweet spot.

Try the 38s or 40s first and/or go with largest tire that fits. Keep in mind that air pressure and tread design are also important factors in fit, ride quality, traction, etc.

38's will not turn a CX bike into a mountain bike, but will make the CX bike significantly more suitable for the trail.

During the CX offseason, I put WTB Riddler 37c on one bike and road tires on the other. The 37c riddlers are more fun on the trail that 33c, even with both being tubeless.

If you want to get as close to a mountain bike tire as possible, 40c Maxxis Ravager is the one to go with.
