Bottom bracket question
I want to swap my SRAM Apex 1 crankset on my gravel bike. The bottom bracket is pressfit BB86. Can I simply switch to a Shimano crank (Ultegra R8000 for example) without swapping the bottom bracket? I think this depends on spindle diameter of the crank, but couldn't find a ton of info in my search.

The SRAM Apex is 24mm drive side, 22mm non whereas the Shimano is 24mm both. You’ll need a new cup for the non drive side.

Good chart to have around

You would need to buy a new bottom bracket for Shimano cranks (i.e. - 24mm on both sides)

I would suggest you pull the Apex crank and check the NDS bearing configuration. While some manufacturers use a special 22mm ID bearing with an extended inner race to support GXP, many just use a 24mm ID bearing with a 22mm ID bushing adapter pressed in. It only takes a few minutes to check it.

If you have the special 22mm GXP bearing then best approach would be a new BB.

Thanks. I will swap BB. Will be my first adventure into wrenching pressfit BB. Not exactly looking forward to it, but something I want to learn. Any pressfit tool you would recommend?

I've got the Park tools BB30 tool. Feel like it worked well. It comes with the bushing presses and I just made my own press out of a bolt, some washers and a nut. Be prepared to feel like you're going to break the frame when you're hammering the bearings out. It's nerve-wracking the first time I did it.

Your best bet to just to go with a new bottom bracket. Most pressfit ones that come stock on bikes are OK, but not necessarily the best from long-term durability. My Canyon Aeroad is pressfit BB86. I simply tapped the old one out. You can use a screwdriver, piece of wood, etc. I just got this removal tool from Jenson USA (https://www.jensonusa.com/...Removal-Tool-en.aspx).

For a new bottom bracket, I've had good luck with Wheels Mfg pressfit thread together ones. You need to purchase their tool to thread the shells together, but they have been creak free for 8,000 miles (https://wheelsmfg.com/...no-cranks-black.html)

For pressing threadless cups together, you can make your own press with a threaded rod and washers. It might be worth your while just to invest in one from Park Tool, Wheels Mfg, etc.

Good luck!
