Blue Green Algae Bloom Ironman Wisconsin 70.3
Quote | Reply
ATTENTION ATHLETES:
After several days of unusually warm temperatures and low winds, Public Health Madison and Dane County has closed multiple beaches, including Olin Park based on high levels of blue-green algae blooms found in the water. These levels currently are impacting the swim location for the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin triathlon.
IRONMAN is working with local authorities to monitor the levels and are preparing adjustments to the swim course if a change should be needed. Please continue to check the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin event website and Facebook page for updates. Information will also be posted at registration check-in and announcements will be made during the athlete briefings on Friday and Saturday.

Apparently they are retesting the water today. Anyone in Madison have any insider information?

Thanks, Matt

Ironman has not said anything more, but according the Clean Lakes Alliance website, Olin Beach is back open. Most of the others on Mendota are as well.

Straight from the Public Health site:

http://www.publichealthmdc.com/environmental-health/beaches-lakes-pools/beach-conditions/beach.cfm?id=15

It was marked closed earlier today, but they re-tested and opened it.

Public Health Madison - Dane County tested bacteria levels at the beaches on June 8, 2018. The results were acceptable. The shallow, near-shore water temperature was 72.6°F. Algae levels vary over time depending on waves and wind. Use common sense and avoid contact with algal blooms that you may observe. Do not let children or pets play in areas where blue-green algae blooms are evident.

I would count on a swim at this point. Just don't swallow lots of water. :D
