Bike in San Francisco
My kids and I are going to San Francisco for a week in August, and I was looking for a good place for us to ride. They will be training for a race so I need an area that is relatively safe, relatively flat, and where you can ride 15-25mph (so no pedestrian/bike-paths). A 1-3 mile loop would be nice. Oh... and somewhere in or close to the city proper, if possible, unless it's really cool and within a half hour, I guess.

LOL... I know that's asking a lot, but maybe I'll get lucky!

Thanks!

You won't have much luck finding flats in SF...But LOTS of great riding...

Any bike shop should be able to give you more explicit routes, these are just suggestions...

If you just want something short and close to the city, go to the Pesidio. You should be able to make up a loop there, but it will include hills. If you want to really experience what the city has to offer cyclists, ride accross the GG bridge and either left up the Marin headlands (very hilly, very scenic) or down to Sausalito. From Sausalito you can either go up Mt. Tam or out to Tiburon and around Paradise Drive for a flatter/rolling ride. Another option is to go up towards Mt. Tam, but instead of going all the way to the top, drop down to Muir Woods, check out the red woods, continue on to Stinson Beach along route 1 (then turn around) OR just head back up the 3mi hill from Muir Woods. Great training. Not to be missed. I'm jealous - I've got central park to look forward to tonight...

Flat and SF? ;-)

I would suggest riding out in the Presidio. It's flat along the waterfront and if you only want flat, you can ride back and forth, about 2 miles each way. Depending on the time of day, you will have huge headwinds one way and a tailwind coming back. You can also loop up in the Presidio, and depending on the road, the hills aren't too bad.
