Just get a cateye astrale... simple, cheap, has cadence and they work. If it goes bust you just buy a new one. Unless of course you have KM40 or some other wierd frame that won't let most computers mount...
Ditto on the Astrale. I've tried a number of them. Forget temperature and that crap. This has the essentials, it's cheap, and it works on the trainer (long enough cable to mount to rear wheel) and the cadence feature is very useful.
