Bike Fit SF bay area
I've been reading this board for quite a while now and decided I should sign up so I can post. I've been reading about the values of being properly fit and now I have a new bike to be fit on, a Softride Rocket TT.

Being in the bay area I have access to a few well know shops/fitters and I wanted to gather some opinions on them or new names to check out. The ones I know about and are considering are

Bicycle Sports in SF

Transition Sports

and PK Racing

Any comment/experiences with those 3, any other suggestions? I'm in SJ, willing to drive around the bay.

Thanks, Joe

Krag at Transition Sports did my fit - nothing but good things to say about Krag and the fit. Dan gave him a writeup here after the FIST sessions.

Closer to you, the fitters at Cupertino Bike Shop are very good at what they do.

I also was fit on my P2K by Krag and can recommend him.

Phil Casanta of Hypercat Coaching also does fittings which many people have been very happy with.

Chris Kautz at PK is awesome. He's done the fit for me on both of my bikes, and I can't say enough about how professional he is, and what a great job he does. He'll not only set you up, he'll explain why certain things work and others may not be appropriate for a given rider - there's no "one size fits all" going on. He was also able to get me a set of the HED bars, back when they were back ordered everywhere.

One problem/challenge - Chris isn't real big on Softride, but he'll definitely get you into your optimum position.

Chris and his partner Eric are both engineers, so he/they may befuddle you with some of the tech-speak, but they're good at explaining it for us dummies, too.

Thanks everyone, I bought by wetsuit from Krag @ Transition sports, he was great to deal with. The only reason that I am hesitant to go to him for the fitting is that I hear these Softride things aren't that easy to setup.

I know Eric up at Bicycle Sports worked at Softride anybody gotten a fit up there?

Thanks again, Joe

Joe,

I would suggest checking this link out. The Performance Service guys provide an awesome service and know all there is to know about Softrides. Good luck!

I believe that Krag used to sell Softrides, so your concerns probably are not justified.

I went to Eric at John Cobb's (Bicycle Sports) in SF - nothing but good things to say. He took a long time with me, addressed every ache and pain I had - not just on the bike, but what arose from the swim and to help stop things on the run. Fixed absolutely everything.

The man ran the show at Softride and I am sure you will not find anyone in the bay area (or most of the country) that understands not only the bike you are on but how to fit you to it. As far as the quality of fit, when you get to the top end (which Eric most certainly is) the variances between the fits minute. I do know however that he no longer works for JC/BS and will be taking appointments next week at his new location Pacific bikes 345 4th street San Fran. Give him a call 415.928.8466

Do yourself the favor and do the right thing for yourself and the bike you ride

I have a neutral recommendation on Bicycle Sports. No reason to say not to go, but certainly no wow factor others have experienced.

The only three minor negatives I can think of: 1) they do not seem to focus on the immediate customer. When some one walks in, they all get distracted. 2) very very limited inventory on hand. 3) Eric is the only one in the shop who seems to have knowledge/service worth $200/hour.

The only three minor positives I can think of: 1) Eric knows triathletes. 2) Flexible, friendly and not arrogant like other shops (Lombardi for example) 3) uh...I can say I went John Cobb's shop? Is that worth something???

You might want to also consider City Cycle. I have been impressed with a couple of the fitters there, although heavily skewed to road and not tri.

UPDATE:
Oh...I just read Trust's post. I change my recommendation to DO NOT go to John Cobb. JC SF is not worth the hype and Eric is the man you want to see.

I would highly recommend Christopher Kautz at PK Racing (www.pkracing.com) for your bike fitting. I've noticed a significant improvement since my fit. He takes the time to understand your specific needs and biomechanics and tailors the fit for you. If you have any issues (i.e. back pain while riding, etc.), let him know and he will take care of that in the fit. He will also teach you how to properly sit on the bike and answer all you questions. You will not feel rushed through the fitting.

As a side note, PK Racing can also design a custom frame for you after the fit.

Regards,
Mikael
