Bike Count
Thanks to Triathlete

Canyon still moving rapidly, QR making nice gains (first to have affordable disc bikes maybe helping?)
I'm projecting 3 years for Canyon to be challenging Cervelo based on their release timeline and a change to electronic count recording at some point.

Aerobars

Getting harder for the specialist companies to hold off bike brands making their own.
Tririgs momentum seems to have been stolen by 51 Speedshop

Same trend in wheels - housebrand stuff like Roval has become pretty good, but it's too much work to tidy up the wheel numbers right now.

Cervelo has what 6 different models. Trek has 1. I would love to see a breakdown of models.

The P3 is usually higher number on it's own than any other brand...
You can work out a bit by cross referencing with bars

For Cervelo - their bars appear on P5D, P3X. P5X. Original P5 would mostly fall under 3T
Felt only sell with their own so mortals are either upgraded IAx or older B-series.
Specialized now only come with their own bars so their mortal numbers are upgraded Shiv Tri or Transitions still out there.
Canyon has their own on SLX, the SL comes with PD but can be changed. So 2/3 of their turnout is the top model
Argon E-119, E-118 or older E-114 are their bars. So similar to Canyon in having ~1/3 on the mortal models (E-117, E-112)
Giant/Liv only sell with their own bars so only a few people who've managed to upgrade
Ventum most people are keeping the horrible bars they come with

So how much money does Ventum spend to market themselves with IM, and up at 43?

Meanwhile, Trek sponsors just a couple pros and ends up second.

I guess I don’t remember this part of the poll. I really had no idea PD was so dominant in this arena. Of the major bike manufacturers, how many have deals with PD to have their bars sold stock with bike?

A few years ago there were more P3's or P5's (or whatever one model it was) than the brand in 2nd place had bikes. Trek has 1 model now, but they didn't in the past. Besides, why should having options that count against Cervelo?

Whether you like Cervelo or not, they've dominated this for a decade and a half. I don't think triathlon will ever see another brand be as dominant. Everyone thinks next year is when things start evening out a bit more (including me), and it just never happens... only 2-10 (or so) seem to do so.

Not a question directly to you, but anyone who might know. Why are Giant and Liv counted as two different brands? Even though combining them only moves "Giant" one spot, it'd take them over 100 total bikes, and would place them ahead of Scott, a brand that has invested quite a bit more in the sport.

Anyone know the split on disc vs. rim brakes and mechanical vs. electronic shifting this year?

Their marketing spend per bike sold is definitely a world record.

In no particular order, these are the brands that spec PD (off the top of my head)
Quintana Roo - full range
Canyon - Speedmax CF (clipons)
BMC - Clipons on TM02, brackets/pads/ext on TM01
Scott
Ceepo
Argon18
Stevens
Diamondback
Cube
Merida

Parlee and Wilier don't have lower end bikes so just brackets/pads/ext on their models

Cervelo had PD on the P2 for a very long time, the P3 just for 2018. Specialized had some spec in the Transition days.

In most cases it's not really a deal - just a conversation and then a purchase order. The Scott Plasma 5 has a custom bracket and bar made by PD, so that is a stronger agreement.

Taichung Bike week is starting in a few days - that's the industry show where future spec is set. Instead of booths in a hall a supplier like PD has a room in one of 3 hotels and bike brands come in for appointments to discuss product. For some brands 2021 is already done and this week will be about 2022 onwards, for others 2021 is still somewhat open. I'm not there this time as I've reduced my contracted hours with PD, but it's the most fun of all the shows as you have quality time with the brands and get to find out about what they've got coming (there is some good stuff in the works).

Spec on Cervelo has been a big factor in the Kona count, for obvious reasons. The rise of 3T mirrored the rise of Cervelo as they had spec on the P3 and P5. If you take the P5 bars out of the count 3T is left with only 20 bars, which also tells you that there are more P5s (270ish) than any other brands total.

I looked back at the last few years to see if I could add them together to show the trend but this was the first time Liv got counted. I don't know if that means that they just went into the Giant total in the past or were ignored.

Adding up the bikes that Giant makes they're still 8 behind Cervelo...

I might have to organise a count for 70.3 worlds next year, then it will be exhaustive info...

Because if a company is willing to sponsor Ironman events I would hope it might pay off for them. K-Swiss made a good running shoe but seemed to falter after they sponsored IM. As have other companies. I hope Hoka and Ventum change that pattern.

Good luck with this! I was counting for the last 4 years, and still the same pattern, major brands don't come to help. Also, again we are surprised with the numbers published... They are the result of a gentleman’s agreement.

Super important, Kona is not reflecting the reality at all.

At the WC, it's more about the superbike and the athlete getting help from a structure, his distributor/brand or rented bike...

K-Swiss shoes.... Now that is some Triathlon nostalgia there. They sponsored a lot of top athletes too, then fizzled out to non-existent. I think Newton sponsored IM as well and they seem to be following K-Swiss' footsteps.

.

I've heard there was ungentlemanly shouting from one of the big brands that is no longer involved in the count...

Ventum bike is so ugly in design. On the othe hand, Trek SC is beautiful to look at. You know people have eyes.
