Big Ride In Iceland. Anybody got a suggestion?

I am going to be in Iceland First Week of July. Want to do a 5 hour ride(200watt), off road would be great, scenic. Renting a bike and don't mind paying for a guide. Anybody got a suggestion?

Around whale fjord and back would be pretty scenic .. no need to go off road. Or do the bike route of the new xtri race they are having next summer.

I didn’t ride a bike there but it was windy everywhere I went. Clip-ons would be a good idea. Be prepared for wind and rain. Although you might get lucky.

Also outside of Reykjavik I didn’t see a whole lot of traffic. So riding the highways seemed like it would be pretty cool.

As for what to see, I just drove along the southern highway to Hofn. Most of the tourists are near the Golden Circle. Which is nice. But there’s a lot more to see elsewhere. Maybe ride one way and fly/take a bus back?

Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path tho. That’s a benefit of avoiding the tourist groups. For example, I hiked up one random path for two hours. The only animal (including humans) I saw was a skua (worth it just for that) and at the end I found a glacier and glacial lake. Climbed around on the glacier (I wouldn’t really recommend it cause that can be dangerous) and then hiked back.

If you have time take a ferry to the Vestmannaeyjar. These are islands off the southern coast where a volcano erupted and destroyed half the city back in the 70’s (maybe 80’s?). Take the ferry from Landeyjahofn. The entire thing can be done in a day unless you want to stay over in the island.

Good luck! Iceland is awesome. If you can find a local to show you around it’s much better. I had the benefit of friends who live there. But I’m sure it would have been great without it.

Also most of the beauty of Iceland is geological not really biological. Don’t know if thy matters to you but a little book about the geology of the island would be good.

Oh yeah, the penis museum in Reykjavik is definitely worth it. No joke.

Did a road trip up to Akureyri on 1. I thought it was beautiful. Would have a good amount of climbing and views but def recommend the west side of the island.

If you want offroad you can go into the highlands. Be prepared for exciting weather wherever you go, though.

Shoot my friend Stephan a message. He's a former triathlete from Austria now living in Iceland running a B&B and ice cave and other trips.

I was in Rekyavik in June and there was a triathlon shop called Tri http://www.tri.is/. Can’t help on the translation but if you email them my guess is they can help. Nice shop. Did the Midnight Sun Run from the Sports Park right across the street. Great country and we loved the trip - as many others commented the weather can be very challenging - and the heavier travelled roads may be good to avoid. Have an awesome trip.

I miss you "Sports Night"
