I don't think I would want to push EACH workout 3-5% longer. For instance, I have maxed out my run mileage and if I add more I will probably get hurt. For me it is a matter of cycling more. I could go longer in swimming, but that is not going to gain me as much as adding bike mileage is.

So I think that yeah, as an average it means each workout needs to be a little bit longer, but in practice it is more fine tuned

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

Dev, makes an interesting point. Not so much for the challenge which is just for fun, but in terms of race performance I wonder how much gain would be made by pushing each workout say 3-5% longer. Physiologically, I am ready to stop at the end of a workout irrespective of length.... would I build mental and physical strength if I always pushed that bit further / harder?

Generally, the workout time I have is fixed and I don't come close to being physiologically spent, mainly because I can't do as much intensity as when I was 25, 35 or even 45. So what that means is I need more time, but that is fixed, too. So I just get more efficient in my changing and take shorter showers....frees up 5-10 min...at least this applies to work days. Weekends and holidays you are right, I can train till I drop, so more volume is not an option. So the quick answer is it/depends.
