Beth Potter triathlete 5k WR

This will interest some folks....

Beth Potter who raced Super League last weekend just ran a 5km road race and seems she broke the women’s world record

https://www.fastrunning.com/...or-beth-potter/32174

Don’t ask me if I know if course was ratified, I don’t know but am sure some ST sleuths can find out soon enough.

Whether it stands as it was in a mixed race is also TBC.

She obviously comes from amazing running pedigree. Though she had a 1500m PB of 4:18 and a 5000m PB of 15:28- I'm not sure from where she was able to run a 14:41

Good for her. She showed in the Arena Games that she has speed in them legs and her background in track running is impressive.

Of course there will be some people chomping at the bit to pick holes in this race. Course must be short. Course must be down hill. She must have drafted off of a motorbike.

A triathlete has ran a 47 second PB at the age of 29 to beat the world record and times set by all other elite world 5k specialists. I think people are allowed to be surprised mate.

It would be the most shocking result in the history of track and field.

Has she claimed a WR, or even mentioned this on her socials? I haven't seen anything of her claiming it. What's wrong with congratulating an athlete on running fast, mate.

Except this isn't track and field. This is a local road race. This was not a ratified race so calm your farm. Well done to her, and every other athlete that ran the race.

JB ran 13:46, which appears to be a pretty quick time for him.

ETA: Per Bad Ash below, this was last year's time. Ignore.

Doesn't matter what she claims. Yes, full congrats to her, but the time she has run is utterly jaw-dropping.
We all know she is an amazing runner, an Olympian at 10,000m finishing 34th in Rio- but she has just beaten the time of best 5000m athletes in the world. (While training for triathlon).

If you don't understand the significance of that, then I don't think you understand athletics at all.

Actually he did 13:52 today, the 13:46 was his time in August last year.

Imagine a triathlete crushing a 5km... and gosh, maybe even representing their country at the Olympics in the 5000m and triathlon. If you think that one cancels out the other have a look at what Hayden Wilde has been doing. 5000m national title, 13:43 solo, then the very next day takes out the national sprint tri championship.

I can confirm the course is accurate. They have been holding races down south since last summer, during times we haven't been in Lockdown. Beth ran 15:24 last year at the same race.

From what I know Beth is super fit just now, not just on the run, but all 3 disciplines. And she is also now wearing MetaSpeed vs MetaRacers last year, which having tested both I think are probably worth half the improvement.

This does have to be put into context though. Over a dozen athletes can beat this time on the track, where even with Super Spikes the advantages don't compare to Super Road shoes. But man I am excited to see what she can do this summer in the WTS.

Little Update:

Seems like there has been a change in the start position from last year, which is always asking for trouble. See how this develops......

I don't think people are being bitter cynics when they query road race times as we all know that there are a whole bunch of variables that can affect times. A decent tail wind and that will shed 30s off your time.

Anyway she's going very well, won the super-league recently, beating Lucy Charles, so is an exciting prospect for sure. She actually swims pretty good, does anyone know if she has a swim background at all or just run?

Ibsynthetic

I imagine she was running in vapourflys which will be the only reason for her improvement. WR is reasonable given cheater shoes.

Sean Ingle (British journo) has said that she is a super-responder to the shoes.

new asics shoe is making bolder claims than vapor/alpha nike, and it looks like this result puts it to fruition

Regardless of if it is ratified as a WR or not, she will be getting a huge amount of publicity. The reason she left running was because of the struggle to get sponsors, you would expect that to change now, which may tempt her back into running. Also with the depth GB women have, she may not choose to stay in tri if it looks like she'll struggle to get in the olympic team for 2024.
