Best food experience near Kona :)
Its my first time here and after shelling myself 2 days straight on the Queen K and fearing for my life in the wind on Kohala I need to eat. The best food :) I bet many folks here have lots of experience so what is the best experience within an hour of Kona. Don't need most expensive. The best experience is most important. Fish is best. We are north in Waikola Beach...near Lava Lava. Please help me eat well. Thank you.

Some suggestions:

Waimea: Merriman's (iconic restaurant that started the local food movement in Hawaii); Red Water Cafe; Big Island Brewhaus (besides making their own beer, the food is very good and not expensive)

Waikoloa Village: Pueo's Osteria

Mauna Lani resort: Under the Bodhi Tree if you want good vegan options; Pele's Wok (same owner as Pueo's, but Asian focus vs. Italian); Binchotan in the Fairmont Orchid

Kawaihae: Seafood Bar is kind of divey, but they do good seafood - it's a local favorite; Kohala Burger and Taco for a casual lunch

Enjoy your time here!

Aloha,
Ian

Can't go wrong with a poke bowl for lunch/post-ride at the grocery stores just off the highway at either Waikoloa Beach or Mauna Lani.

Sushi Rock out in Hawi is very good.

+1 on Big Island Brewhaus and also in Waimea is the very epic The Fish and The Hog. Try the ride up to Waimea from down in Kawaihae. Nice grade and decent shoulder all the way, and sheltered from the wind unlike the Hawi grind.

If the wife/sig-other went with you to Kona, then this is the place for a really nice meal.

An awesome budget option that gets you a good amount of poke at far less cost than a restaurant.

It's a bit of a drive, but if you are into beer and local great food, then the Big Island Brewhaus in Waimea is worth it - http://bigislandbrewhaus.com/

We've done the Kohala Mtn Road Loop a few times starting/finishing in Waimea and the Big Island Brewhaus was our refuel and rehydration (with the great beer, of course) point!

Honestly, the best thing to do is to find real laulau. It is an old Hawaiian/Polynesian specialty. My favorite is Super J's in captain Cook. It doesn't look like much from the outside but it sure is good.

Barefoot Zone

Its a bit hidden back in one of the alleys in town. The speed of service is very much island time, but fantastic for breakfast and lunch.

o to the harbor and see if you can get fresh tuna, if not Costco's isn't bad. Fire up the grill, sear each side, rice, green beans, mix some soy and peanut butter, a couple of longboards and you'll have the best dinner in Kona.
