Basic head unit that reads power
I recently purchased my first PM and now I am looking for a basic head unit that reads power. I do 99% of my training indoors so I've been using Golden cheetah as a "display" and my garmin watch to record the workout but I need to purchase a head unit basically only to display power/pace data for future races, I don't need courses, strava, navigation, gps, etc., what are your recommendations?

If you really want to go basic, just mount your Garmin watch to your bike https://www.rei.com/...gps-watch-bike-mount

The Lezyne Macro GPS: https://ride.lezyne.com/...ducts/macro-plus-gps

$100

It's not as elegant as the Garmin units (IMO), but works great and the price is hard to beat. Uploads to the Lezyne phone app post-ride can be quite slow, so I just use it as a visual head unit, and do my recording on my watch (Fenix5) since it auto syncs to Garmin Connect/Strava.

During racing, I rather not have to take my watch on and off, i tried to check my watch on my wrist while ride but I felt it was uncomfortable and besides my 735xt display is kind of small, I was hoping something a little larger.

+1 for the Garmin Edge 130 if you need to buy new or look out for a used Garmin Edge 500 - I’ve bought 3 each for $50-$100.
The 130 loses just a small amount of functionality compared to the 500 but each will provide basic power metrics (along with the normal gps speed, distance etc)

I have a Bryton 310 that has all the stuff. Think it was $65. No complaints, except it doesn't read the Powertap speedometer, and it's just a basic GPS (not glonass). Battery life is *much* better than Garmin, ~25hrs.

I second the Bryton 310, does the job just fine. I've been using one for 18months and would buy another tomorrow. They cost a lot less than many of the brands for similar functionality.

I wouldn't sell my Garmin 500, the battery is crap.

Try and find an old Bontrager Node?

Edit: looks like the Node is replaced by the Ridetime Elite.

I would concur with the Bryton 310 and Lezyne Macro GPS. I have both, I like the Lezyne a little better, but both do the job and are inexpensive.

+1. Ugly, but really full featured and solid as a rock.

Kind of from left field, but check out the Polar M460. Although Polar doesn't officially sell them in the US, you can find them online for very little money if you look. What makes it interesting is that it has quite a number of advanced power metrics.

One thing I wanted to mention was that if you do end up going with an older unit like a 310 XT many of them will only work with ant, not Bluetooth, check your pm
