for the OP, there are two threads on this on weight weenies. go to google and type argon dark matter site:http://weightweenies.starbike.com/, and the results should pop up
general consensus is that it's a well-built bike, albeit on the slightly heavier side (at least from a roadie's perspective)

off on a tangent, what Madison area fire roads/gravel (and perhaps even single track) would one take this bike?

I can check around but I know there are tons of trails from here that are the crushed limestone. I talked to a friend the other day who rode from Madison to Dodgeville on the trail (https://dnr.wi.gov/.../name/militaryridge/). There are quite a few others as well, but the area around the Military Ridge trail can be some amazing hills in the Blue Mounds, Dodgeville areas...
