Hey there

Found out today that I tore my plantar fascia...waiting to see the doc for what that means but wondering if anyone here has ever done that and how long it took them to come back? Could you at least ride and swim while recovering?

Thanks

How did this happen? And, how was it diagnosed?

Had chronic Plantar fasciatis for months and then raced a week and half ago...went to run 3 days later and it was too painful to even make it 2 miles...hubby is an ortho and sent me for an MRI thinking it might have been a stress fx...it wasn't...so now im waiting to see foot and ankle specialist as my husband doesnt do that...and frankly he knows better than to be the one to deliver the news that I cant run for a while...

When I ruptured my PF, I had to take about three weeks off then resumed running. After that the plantar fascia will need to be stretched regularly. There will be some scar tissue but overall the PF will be under much less strain. I believe the rupture was the best thing as it totally cured my planter fasciitis- it hasn’t returned in 5 years.

Yeah I read that. I have a partial tear. Almost wished it would fully rupture. Best I can tell I’m looking at 6 weeks in a boot and then start slowly running. I’m assuming I’ll be sent to PT as well.

Yes!!! I partially tore mine in fall of 2015. At first, podiatrist thought it was a bursa so I had a cortisone shot...which decreased the bursa, but then made the partial tear more visible.

My podiatrist presented me with two options: PRP or Amniofix injection. Amniofix is a newer treatment and I researched as much as I could find about it (not much at the time). Ultimately, Amniofix was going to be a faster recovery and would allow me to get back to swimming and biking sooner. Basically, it's amniotic tissue injection that provides scaffolding to promote growth of new tissue that will repair the tear. I know, definitely sounds weird but also seems super logical. So I went with it and am really glad I did (all of my pre and post feelings are on my blog at jacquisjourney.com if you want more details).

I was able to bike and swim again in 7-15 days. I didn't run for like 2.5 months, and had a little scar tissue buildup. The podiatrist did a little shockwave therapy to break it up and then I was running totally normal again. Amniofix injections are supposed to take 30-40 days to fully repair the tear.

Here was my timeline:
-December 14: Amniofix injection
**on crutches for 3 days until I progressed to just the boot
-December 22: began using the arm bike and spin bike
-December 29: cleared to swim
-February 5: call from podiatrist, my tear was healed!
-end of March: running pain free! (would have been MUCH sooner if I didn't have scar tissue buildup)

I'd definitely see a podiatrist if you can and pick their brain on options. Ask any questions you have!:)

What were your symptoms guys?
I think I have the same thing.
Well ....... podiatrist says I have a tear of PF.
Gave me shoe inserts, told me to ice, stretch, run tops 50% of what I was previously doing.
My symptoms are extreme HEEL pain. Doesn’t hurt as much while running as next morning- OUCH!
Your symptoms?

Thanks! I’ll check out your blog. I think mine was done during a race on uneven terrain on father’s day. In walking boot and seeing specialist next week. Wanted to bike today. Figured the shoe is pretty solid and I’ll put in insoles too. But seems like running is 2-3 months away.

I had severe plantar fasciitis and it just progressed. Didn’t feel snap or pop. Mri showed it.

Partial tear in 2014. Took a couple of weeks off of running then started back. Didn't impact swimming or biking but I didn't run pain free for almost 2 and 1/2 years until a cancer operation forced two months down time and then magically it was gone ;) In hindsight, when it first happened I should have stopped running for that long a period but we all know how hard that is to do.

Wow. Hope the cancer recovery is going well. That’s obviously most important.

And yeah it seems like I’ll need 6 weeks in the boot and no running until then. But I’m planning on riding the bike on my trainer and swimming but with a pull bouy.

It went really well. They just had to rip out my prostate. I've got a 98% ten year survival rate; well make that 8 since it was almost two years ago ;)

No doubt I took a 10-20% hit there but then that's why they make the blue pill. But riding is another matter; I just did 230 miles of gravel in 15 hours Saturday and I didn't feel my prostate at all :)

I would take a pill to avoid 230 miles of gravel! But glad it helps you when you need it! And glad they caught it early...you should do just fine...

my plan is to be in the boot 4-6 weeks and im going to swim and cycle during that time...then when i run ease into it...both in pace and distance...from your experience does that sound good? I have 3 different orthopedists with 3 different opinions telling me what to do...

My experience with it sucked. I tried everything (except rest). It also morphed into insertional Achilles tendonitis which was worse. Listen to your docs. I believe it was RROOF who posts here wrote that it's always the last thing someone tries that they believe fixes it and they may or may not be true and that is why there are so many supposed "cures" out there for it. It's a bummer that we're in the middle of race season but I say bite the bullet and rest, follow your doctors advice, and get it fixed right the first time!

I do agree...rest is the universal prescription...and the boot speeds that up...so it goes...we live in florida though so while my a races are shot i can do a bunch of other stuff throughout the year...

Jordan Hasay tore hers about two years ago after a long bout with PF. She discussed it in an interview (Runners' World?), and she discussed her time off and recovery. The Google might help. Good luck!
