Anyone else have their heart skip during exercise?
OK first of all, yes I have asked my doctor about this, many times. He says it is probably just premature beats and that lots of people get them but not everyone can feel them. Doctor doesn't seem excited about them at all, and I think my dr. is a pretty thorough kind of guy. But a lot of times I will feel a skipping sensation or a brief sharp (but not intense) pain under the sternum during workouts, especially swims for whatever reason. It will happen once or twice and then it is gone before I knew what hit me. I don't feel bad, don't get short of breath, and I don't even have to stop my workout or even slow up. But nonetheless it still seems to be concerning. Anyone else have such things? Or is it just me? Thanks.

Yep. I have been diagnosed with para atrial tachycardia, which feels like a heart "flutter." Doc said it was mild and no reason for concern. My uncle is a marathon runner with the same condition (and is a doc) and said in mild cases is not concern.

That being said, I went to a specialist to have all the requisite tests run to ensure it wasn't something more serious when I first started noticing it.

I get it once a month or so, but never when exercising (or at least I never feel it then). I always assumed it was just a PVC, never have gotten it checked out. If it happened more frequently or when training I think it would freak me out.

Yes I have a very similar thing.

A few years ago, doing stupidly hard workouts (ovr 200BPM) Iwould get chest pain just to the left of my ternum. this got worse over time so I eventually saw a cardiologist. After 2-1/2 years and a multitude of tests (treadmill, stress echo's CT Angiograms, Holter monitor, event monitor etc, etc) they haven't been able to find much wrong, let a lone a course of treatment.

I fired my cardiologist a few weeks ago and am now training by feel rather than my HRM.

IF you are only having mild symptoms as you report, and have seen a doc about it, don't stress too much. Do pay attention to it and note any change with either theseverity of the symptoms or their frequency.

Mine has got considerably worse with time and I now feel chest pain all the time (even sitting here at my computer) and it's worse whenever I do any training at all. The pain isnow a large J shape, from my collar bone, down to the left of my sternum, and hooks around under my left breast. All up about 10" long or so. Very localized pain, and quite sharp. When training hard, it is now intense enough that it is my limiting factor at high revs.

Before I fired him, my cardiologist said my heart muscle itself is extremely good, and my arteries are better than textbook (they show normal arteries in the books :-). Ihave zero evidence of any plaque etc and it's in great shape. He said I do not have to have even a remote worry about a heart attack. With my extremely low cholesterol loevels, I'm in awesome heart shape. It's just that the arrythmia happens for know identifiable reason. I have decided to take control of my life and no longer be ruled by this heart problem. Hey, we all die eventually, I don't want to die from not living, so I'm starting to live my life again, rather than live in fear of a substandard heart.

Like I said before, pay attention to your symptoms and look for change, but don't worry overly much.

Yep. PVC's can be felt (Feels kind of like a "lurch" in the chest), and everyone has them from time to time.

I have a mild prolapse that tells me when I am way too dehydrated, I'll lay on the couch and I can hear a "click" from my chest with every heartbeat. Creeped me right the hell out the first time I heard it.

What? You're a useless old fat slow blonde that can't pull chicks, as well? Cool! And I thought I was alone.

(I sure hope you aren't as useless as me at triathlon! That would be sad, and a damned good reason to give up. hehehe)

Yep - me too!

Had no Idea what it was until now. To me it feels like my heart 'jumps' inside my chest for one beat - I never worried about it.

Yeah, same thing here. It seems like a single big beat followed by kind of a gap in the normal rhythym. Like a double beat or something... Nothing on the ecg.

It is normal for an athlete to have minor skips or PVC's. In fact it is normal to have a couple hundred of these a day. You will not feel most of them. Ocasionally it may skip more than one beat, and usually when you are realxed and thinking about it, you willl feel it. Too much caffine, electrolyte imbalance, stress, are just some of the factors that can trigger it. No big deal usually, and worrying about it often makes it worse......

On ocasion, and in my case, my heart was stopping for up to 20 seconds at a time. An electrical block between the atrium and the ventricle. I had to have emergency heart surgery, and a pacemaker implanted. When your heart stops for that long, a good chance it may not start again in time for me to survive.. Best thing is to get a good echo to make sure that nothing physically is wrong with your heart, otherwise the quick visit and an EKG doesn't usually show anything. It didn't in my case, and I had a serious problem. It took a 24 hour EKG to show what was going on with me.

Are you a guy or girl? Women have very different symptoms than men.I had a similar episode where my heart was racing like crazy during a bike work out, even hours later.Went to an Urgent care center, everything was normal, excpet my for cardiac enzymes, slightly elevated. So I was admitted to the Hospital cardiac care unit.Had every possible test done(all normal),saw a Arrhythmia specialist.....Nothing wrong, never had it happen again and I just did CA 70.3.
He explained to me that we could have these skips due to misfiring of signals, there is a big difference between exercise induced and pre exercise...
In other words see a Cardiologist, than at least you know, eveything will be ok.
