Has anyone found the 'right' travel case for the Andean?

Doesn't Diamondback make a case specifically for this bike? Or perhaps they designed their box to be reusable as a travel case?

No case that I'm aware of, maybe you're thinking of the P5X?

I had also heard magical things about the shipping box. I picked my bike up at diamondback HQ and asked about getting one. They said it was just a regular box.

No, I'm not thinking of the P5X or the Premier Tactical (though both of those have specific cases made for them). I'm pretty sure I read that Diamondback developed the box to act as a travel case and that they were developing a proper hard case as well.

You are correct. If you go through the Diamondback Custom Studio for the Andean, once you get to the accessories section there is an option to select the "Diamondback Custom Travel Bag" for $290. But it's currently listed as temporarily out of stock

Hi guys!
Basically same question.

Have any one of you Andean owners traveled with your bike?
I used the Scicon Triathlon softbag for my old Cervelo P5.

None of the bike boxes on the market seem to fit the totally different shape of the Andean. Last year I did not fly with my bike.
Got a reply from Bikind that their Helium will not work.
I am considering a Thule Roundtrip Transition, I would probably have to make some adjustments on the strap down system included in that box.

If anyone have traveled successfully with this bike and wheels, any insight is highly appreciated.
Thanks.

Still wondering about this myself. Fredly on this forum (works with DB) recommended the EVOC case to me, but I'm leery of soft cases.

Hi folks, sorry I didn't respond earlier.

Soft cases are, IMO the way to go right now. Traveling with bikes basically every other weekend for a year, 100% of the damage that I experienced was the result of TSA opening hard cases and closing incorrectly (or not closing at all, when they couldn't figure out how to put the bike back in.) Zero damage when I used soft cases. The fact that TSA can unzip, look inside, and zip back up pretty much eliminates the most significant threat to your bike, the wonderful people at TSA.

I used an EVOC to fly an Andean all over the world last year, and it was fantastic. Zero damage over thousands of miles, and packed super fast. Problem is, it was a prototype of a bag that I don't know will ever make production. We just got one of their inline bags in, and I'm going to put a bike in it early next week and see how it goes. Will report back.

Thanks Matt, please report back! What do you mean by 'inline bag'?

The nice thing about bike flights/FedEx is no TSA.

Bikeflights is pretty great, but Alaska airlines is free if you've got their credit card!

Inline, meaning bag they actually sell (as opposed to the one I was using.)

Nice. How much disassembly did you need to do? Just base bar/extensions?

Hard bento off stem, Cups/pads off base bar, stem off bike w/basebar still attached. I pull the extensions out of basebar because that's easy with DI2. Turn stem sideways, velcro to frame.
Seatpost out, saddle stays on post
Derailleur off frame, in bag and velcroed to inside of chainstay.
Rotors off of wheels.

Timed it, took me less time to pack an Andean in this bag than to pack my road bike in hard case. Which is pretty damn fast (I use power tools :) )

That's the hot tip, btw. Bring a small power driver with you. Make sure it has a clutch, and use it to rough assemble before final with torque wrench.

Do you by any chance have pictures of the Andean ind the bag?

My thought is perhaps to modify my scicon tri bag’s metal part, but if this bag is perfect then theres no reason to do so :)

Sorry, I don't. Bag is out on the road, otherwise I would grab some for you.

It really is just about perfect, though. The fork holster thing they use to secure the bike winds up being the perfect solution for the Andean's down tube shape.

I would appriciate if you can take some the next time you have it home and packs the andean down.

My real consern, and whats stops me in my scicon bag, is the triangle Down by the crank, I fear it will be exposed no matter what I do.

I will see what I can do, but may be quite a while before that is possible. Link below to pic of an Andean in an EVOC bag which is similar - and will also fit the Andean - but not as well as the Dakine, which is larger and has a mounting system that works a bit better with the Andean. Note that we're using one of the packing blocks that comes with the original shipping container for the Andean to protect the downtube extension. This is highly recommended.

I've previously used a SCION triathlon softcase bag to store my Andean (XL) in when traveling. However it need to be modified a bit. Here's what I've done to make it hold my Andean.
I've raised the front stand holding the fork so it is raised, which leaves room for the "triangle -behind the front wheel" so it doesn't touch the bottom of the bag.
The Andean doesn't have QR so you also have to fix that when mounting the bik onto the frame inside the bag.

Apart from that I reuse a lot of the padding that came in the nuke-proof box from Andean.

Recently I purchased Diamondbacks travel bag specific for the Andean. I have not tried that one yet - but I'm looking forward to see how it fits.

Hold yer horses here. I didn't think the Andean case actually existed. Do you have a link?

Oh, cool. Please post a review when you get your hands on it. If it's reasonable, $290 is an incredible price; seems most similar items are ~50% more.

We are not currently offering this product, sorry. We did a very small run of them when we first came out with the Andean, as we were unsure as to whether off the shelf solutions would work. Now that we know there are acceptable (honestly? Better) products available from third party vendors, we are unlikely to produce more of them.

Does anyone mount their Andean on a roof mount auto rack? I'm looking for a mount that will attach to my Yakima crossbars that will hold my bike. Looking at the different Yakima mounts, the ones that allow the front wheel to stay on have a wheel brace on the back side of the front wheel that looks like it will come up too far and hit the frame.
