I know little about this race, but it sounds awesome. Do people camp nearby? Or are there hotels close?
What's the course like? Super hilly?
It IS awesome!
You can camp nearby if you so desire.
There's one campground area that is literally right along the bike course.
There are hotels fairly close by - everything from a Hostel thru cheap chains thru a Hampton Inn and all the way up to the 5* Mohonk Mountain House.
It is quite hilly, but nothing mere mortals can't handle.
All 3 distances start off with the same 5m trail run. It's hilly, but not terrible, and everybody runs all of the first run, because they can.
Enjoy that feeling, since you likely won't be doing that again the whole way the next time around.
Short Course aka Canadian Womens Distance then has 1 lap of the bike course, a challenging but super fun hilly 29m loop, which starts off (after bombing down the dirt road coming from transition) with a tough climb up Mohonk.
Followed by an E-ticket ripping descent.
It's an awesome bike loop, with a bunch of fantastic scenery and wide variety of terrain.
Short course finishes up with another 5m lap of the run course. Get acquainted with the term "power-hiking", since the gravity gets turned up to 11 on all the hills on the run course after you've done the bike loop.
Middle Distance aka the G Chris Gleason Memoral, is a F1 format:
Run/Bike/Run/Bike/Run.
So - identical to Short Course, but then you go out for another bike after the 2nd run, then a 3rd run lap after the bike.
T3 & T4 are definitely an interesting new experience.
Long Course - is 1 lap run/3 laps bike/3 laps run.
7-10+ hours of fun, for the same low, low price as the other 2 races!
All of which followed by FREE BEER!!
In Big Honkin Steins!!
(Assuming you place well enough to win one)
And a fantastic post race spread put out by Doug and crew from Main Street Bistro.
There's nothing more fun than finishing your race, hanging out drinking beer and swapping war stories, all while heckling the long course racers as they come thru the Pavilion yet again.
It doesn't get any better than that.
