Aero socks for 70.3?
Hi everyone
I’m doing my first 70.3 next week.
I was thinking about using my aero socks to the bike and keeping them on during the run as well. I’m planning on riding it on 37-38ish kp/h, so there will be an aero advantage in using them.
My only concern is the time wasted on putting them on, and running on them in t1 and t2 to and off the bike, which will most likely ruin them.
What’s your opinion? I’ve seen Michael Weiss using knee-high aero socks for the 2018 Ironman world championship

Personally, I wouldn’t ruin them by running in transition.

Another option is calf sleeves that offer aero benefits. You can have them under your wetsuit (assuming wetsuit legal), so no added transition time; and full aero coverage of the lower leg.

I'm a fan of socks for the aero benefit. Plus I would put them on for the run anyway, so no real time loss there. I skip the flying mount and just put shoes on/off by my transition mat.

What socks? This is the first I’ve heard of aero socks. What’s the watts savings?

I raced with an injury and used compression socks to keep one leg together and put them on at T1.

They were a bitch to get on and so I had to practice. I looked up videos of triathletes putting on long socks and race strategy to save time.

I ended up practicing having them inside out to start with the toes up to three fingers almost to the end of the finger turned in, so you just slide your toes in and then wiggle up to your ankle and then pull them on all the way.

I got it down to about 10sec or less per sock which was pretty good for me. I also used a small tripod chair I got off Amazon at the time to plunk down really quick. Two of the volunteers in T1 saw this and thought it was amazing lol.

I don’t have that injury anymore so don’t use the socks now.

Nopinz/Aerocoach claim 3-6 watts. Their version are calf sleeves rather than full socks so I imagine they would be faster to get on in T1. They also mention just wearing them in The swim under the wetsuit. At 50 Euro that’s not a bad watt/$ ratio. I thought about getting some this past season to try but never got around to it

In the windtunnel the No-Pinz were slow on me compared to these basic 2XU MCS Compression Sleeves. I think the goal is to get some of the tightest sleeves you can find and you will be good. If you think about the No-Pinz, yes they have trip strips but the trip strips are going to be positioned in different places based on each individual leg and thus not optimal for everyone.

Yeah that's a good advantage with calf sleeves that you can wear them under the wetsuit.

This.

If I could fiddle with the No-Pinz socks, spend time with them in the tunnel really dialing their position in, and be very exact in positioning them before a TT, you could probably squeeze out a few more watts. For a triathlon transition environment, you're probably just better off with the tightest compression sleeves you can comfortably wear. I'll second the 2XU MCS sleeves.
