Advances in Technology, Science & Medical Treatment

As an aging athlete and ST reader for years, I've been keenly interested, concerned as well as puzzled how athletes (age group and pro's) could be so fit well into their 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's etc. and without warning, sudden cardiac deaths occur. In many (or most) cases, we never learn the cause.

In older athletes, sudden cardiac death is typically caused by coronary artery disease. Occasionally, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, mitral valve prolapse, or acquired valvular disease is involved. In other conditions or circumstances underlying sudden death in athletes (e.g. asthma, heatstroke, illicit or performance-enhancing drug related complications), ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation is a terminal event and not a primary event (as in the "kiss of death")

I'm wondering how long it will take for these technologies (diagnostic tests) to hit mainstream, help identify potential problems and provide manageable solutions for people to remain competitively active with minimal chances of dropping dead during exercise.
