Too bad, i guess it was something so bad that even 7th was out of his sights.. Maybe cold? A lot of these ironman folks are selected for their abilities in the heat, so when the once in a blue moon rainy and cold day comes along, they suffer. I was the exact opposite, so got to have a great race on those blue moon days..

Considering what a cluster the AG race is becoming with a shortened swim for some people, WTC is about to have a very difficult day, TRS crew at the finish will be the cherry on that sundae!

Weather moved in, lightning and rain, so they had to stop the swim while some were still on their 2nd loop or before they even started it. Sounds like anyone who swam 1:15-1:20 did the full swim while the slower folks were stopped. The plan as it's known at this point is to only use peoples first loop swim time and throw out any 2nd loop times AND T1 times for everyone.

that's ridiculous. Anyone slower than 1:15 is not in the running for anything. Awards and Kona slots to those who made the cutoff, participants and you are an Ironmans to everyone else.

For the most part, yes, but you never know, some guy or gal may be a lousy swimmer but a great bike/runner and could still content.

not today. they missed the cutoff. If they only take lap 1 times then that person is doing a different race than the ones who did the full swim. doing the full swim *does* have an effect on your bike/run performance, or IOW, not doing the full swim *could* positively benefit (and in this case unfairly) your bike/run performance.

quick data call: What's the slowest swim for a KQ slot in 18-49 men over the last 10 years?

change of plan... it has to be AG adjusted. If nobody in your AG made the cut (ie. oldsters) then lap 1 times only. 18-49 men, you're SOL. Full swim or else no awards. You're still an Ironman though.

Maybe in your age group, but in the older ones a 1;15 could be huge. There is a guy that is 58 i believe that swims right about there, then does a 4;44 bike and low 3 hour run. Maybe he would be in the running against you? (-;

It really sucks for the faster swimmers, and twice as bad as usual. Not only did they have to do the whole swim, their competitors only have half the time disadvantage and they got to swim half the race!!! The fairest way to handicap this thing would be to double all the one lap swimmers times, not sure why that was not considered. That would still give the slower swimmers some advantage( 1/2 swim and most certainly a faster time just doubling the one lap), but it would have been pretty close to fair for the folks that did do the entire swim. As a RD that is what i would have done..

Regardless, they are still a lot fresher then they folks who went the full 2.4 miles.

Who cares about the Kona slots in this race or who has an advantage because they didn't do the whole swim, the important question here is were they able to keep the the "big checks" dry through all the rain and keep the ink from running? Focus people!

Wtc also pays athletes to do their races, just like your example with Macca. They have contracts in place for certain pros to do a multitude of their races in fact. And they are not "weird" contracts, they are standard in the industry. Care to keep arguing about something you know nothing about?

You know why I didn't know that? Because it was left off the gofundme page, perhaps intentionally. What you are saying is that it's entirely possible the 7th place finisher is getting an apperance fee, it's possible the top 10 are getting paid, it's possible they're all getting paid. It's even possible that the reason the cash awards seem low is that WTC has allocated money towards appearance fees instead.

Likely? Who knows, do you? Does RTS?

Last year Josh Beck swam a 1:17 and finished 7'th overall. About 20 minutes behind Potts, so unless only the top 6 matter - swimming over 1:15 is not a big deal to do well.

Sixth place Rix has slowed dramatically between mile 8 and 12. If it's intentional, he's in complete control as he'll be able to speed up and slow down at will, and make sure that 8th place doesn't pass him.

All the athletes have a dramatically slower split between 8 and 12. My guess is its just a harder part of the course.
