This is really stupid and not going to influence anything. With that said, I'm horribly tempted to put in $50,000 and make a mockery of the event as the pros stumble over themselves to finish 7th.

If you have that much money to waste on something like that, then throw some my way. I have a basement reno coming up.

I'll create my crowd funding page today.

Do it!

Not all of them. Personally, I haven't raced a WTC event in several years and I'm hoping to keep it that way. There are plenty of other pro races out there. Not sure why others haven't followed this path, but the answer most likely has to do with their sponsors.

Let's think about this from the 6th place perspective. The pot is currently about $920 above the 6th place payday of $750. Let's round it up to $1000 for simplicity (and likelihood). What kind of behavior does this warrant during the race?

If you cross paths with 7th place along River Rd, do you proceed at pace? Do you just casually dial down the pace, and hope that they make the catch? Do you grind it down to a halt and let them lead you home to a bigger payday? $1000 is nice, but it's not exactly sell-your-soul money.

Furthermore, at what level of outside compensation would you expect a 6th place pro to effectively stop and wait for the next unsuspecting pro to pass them by? I'd put it above $5k. That feels like a permissible level of greed.

We need a pace bike to follow the 7th place athletes. How can we implement this without an outside assistance penalty? Who will volunteer?

and let's not forget the 8th place perspective- they are going to go hard since it is all or nothing. I can see some interesting scenarios between places 6-8 on the run.

If the pot gets big enough, say over $4000, would you split it up to pay 7-10th? Say 7th-$1500, 8th-$1200, 9th-$750, 10th-$550?

Dark Mark posed this question to our donors and they have overwhelmingly responded that all the money should go to 7th. I agree with the majority of our donors. The aim of this stunt is not to offer a handout. We're not socialists. Our goal is to cause a commotion, draw eyeballs to the issue, and possibly affect a change in the hearts and minds of Ironman participants. If participants begin to have a lower opinion of WTC, then it may behoove WTC to pay a little more just for the positive PR.

Excellent point! Only one of them (finishing 6-8) will be going home empty-handed!

I can't personally imagine these scenarios playing out in my head. On the second loop of that run, the only clear thought in my head is to get to the damn finish line! As I said before (from my non-pro perspective), the bidding would need to begin at around $5k for me to entertain abandoning my race and prolonging the day. Even then, $5k would be a hard sell.

You need to patrol the last 5k to offer pickle juice in case 5th or 6th place "suddenly develops cramps" and has to walk.

To have sandbaggers chasing the 7th place purse ... it can only help the stunt.

There is a funny scene from Family Guy. They were at the Special Olympics and the event was "guys too afraid of breaking finishing line tape", and it had them all running 100m dash and then running in place, to afraid to be the 1st to break the tape at the finish line.

I wish I could find it online somewhere, as that would be very fitting preview of what likely could happen.

By the way, I'll be releasing all of the WTC financials on my blog later in the week. I leaked a few key stats from my twitter account, but the timing is right for an award winning column that fully explains their business, which I began writing last night from a small cabin in the mountains.

None of the magazines that you waste money on with every month would touch this issue with a 10 foot pole. Lava, Triathlete

TRS, I think Ted Kaczynski's cabin is available. Wil need some clean sheets.
