Are the 6770 a must-have? I am pretty sure that any of the newer generation levers would work with the 10-speed drivetrain.

That is indeed right, newest manual here

Furthermore, I don't think there was a 677x series bullhorn shifter

There are the 6871/8060 shifters (for bullhorn mounting), but definitely no counterpart in the 677x series.
