2018 World SwimRun Equipment Test – Shoes

Next to wetsuits, the shoes are very important and the 2ndmost expensive equipment you will buy for swimrun. Regardless of which shoe you opt for, it should fit your foot, feel comfortable, provide a good grip and support your running technique. You will find shoes for all kinds of environments and terrain like tarmac, trails, gravel roads, rocky and beach conditions and so forth. But since you’ll swim with them on (most of us do) it’s also important that the material of the shoe doesn’t retain too much water and that it drains any excessive water quickly when you start to run. Apart from this, there are several other features that are of importance but most related to individual preference like how much the shoe weighs, how much drop it has, if it offers any support/cushioning and, last but not least, how much they cost.
In April this year, swimrunners from World of Swimrun (WoS), Swimrun France (SR-F), Swimrun Germany (SR-G)and GoSwimrun Polandteamed up in Hvar, Croatia for the annual international and independent swimrun equipment test. For 3 days, the team tested and debated 7 different type of swimrun shoes.

Is it true that most SwimRun people just swim in their shoes? I did SOS one year and very few people did this. I had wanted to try some actual testing to see how much it slowed me down, if at all, never got around to it. Anyway, seems like they focused on a narrow type of shoe for this test. Personally, I'd go Nike Free, though I think older versions of that shoe were probably better for this than the newest ones.

I did my first SwimRun event, Breca Bay of Islands, on the 15th of this month. I didn't see anyone take their shoes off for the swims, although of course that doesn't mean nobody did. A few people had modified fins to go over their shoes, and a few people were carrying flotation bags with backpack straps which they might have been putting stuff in. I just found I got used to the drag of shoes in the water from pool practices before I did the event. My only tip is this: DO NOT wear road shoes. If I'd worn my trail shoes, I probably wouldn't have had to do half the race on a broken ankle.

Yes, the vast majority keep their shoes on, some elites swimrunners could sometimes fold their shoes (kind of minimalist shoes) inside their wetsuite (lower back) during long leg swim (several km). It's an outdoor sport, when you reach the shore it's not always a nice beach, it could be messy, with slippery rocks. Hence the grip on wet, hence the mesh to evacuate the water etc.

there is a calendar on the website worldofswimrun, and quite some scenic races in the US

Yes, almost everybody. It may be advantageous to take them off for long swims, but not for short ones. Don't forget also that often you have to land on sharp rocks in sometimes rough conidtions and cutting your feet is a real possibility. So it's a compromise between time taken to take them off, store them, put them back on again and risking cutting yourself, vs. more hydrodynamic position and time gain

Always tricky what to chose to test. But I agree that the range of potential shoes is much wider, no debate.
