11 Speed wheel hack and other bike stuff

Had a set of made-in-china carbon tubulars 10 speed that would work on my 11 speed Giant road.

Basically you need 1.8mm more depth on the hub so took a flat file to the nubs at the back of the hub. Measured with a caliper every few mins of work. . I could have used my lathe but this was quicker :). The filing mod took about 1/2 hour then a new 11 speed cassette torqued on and transfer to bike. Slight gear murmur but after some chain lube that went away.

20km ride, did some wheelies seems good. I shoulda taken some photos in the shop.

Also from China I've had a heck of a time with valve extensions. A whole mega-pack of them driving-me-nuts. As soon as I turn them down, PSSSSSSS the native valve leaks like crazy. Today I measured the presta nut and it's= 4mm. Then I took a <4mm drill into the extension and found the length inside was (way) too short. Drilled the extension innards with a 4.2mm drill and voila - it's fixed! Got a whole pack to do.

Next up I've got some really nice new tufo carbon 25mm tubulars tires to put on. Just a PS the Tufo carbons are great - I used them on my city bike & give them 5 stars for ride and quality. Good price a wiggle.com as well.

Did the same to a hub few weeks ago.
Was thinking bout gettin any new for a while but decided to keep my 2009 Specialized Allez Elite and upgrade it a little. Since I was running 2011 ttr3 wheels on it I was Thinking bout goin to 11 speed.
Bought R7000 Shifters,Derailleur, cassette (11/30) and chain.
Filed the hub to check if there is enough clearance at the spokes.
Kept the old 105 front derailleur (cause for the 7000 it says a max of 53 teeth chainring), the 10 speed Crank with 54/38 and the 7800 brakes (I upgraded yrs ago).
Runs smooth and looks way cleaner. Ain’t 100% groupclean and the calipers aren’t black but wtf....didn’t even fork out 300 and put in a little work.

As I was filing I was wondering about spoke or hub axles interference but there is just enough room there on the hub I did. I probably got 1.7mm off of it, maybe a little short.

I guess the thing is if you screw up, you can always just put in a spacer of x mm to get back to 10 speed dimensions.

I have some recent chinese carbon clinchers which is 11 speed and they are clearly have a machined hub, from the supplier
(what was a 10 speed stock has just been lathe'd off). Gave me confidence to dive in.

It's easier to machine 1.8mm off of the back of the cassette.

Also, those Tufo tires are slow.

That was my approach as well since I had spacers laying around.
