Is this combo possible? Or make for unreliable shifting? Any experience?

Pretty sure you'd have to change to a long cage?

If I remember correctly I think the biggest you can run in back is a 27 or 28 with a short cage. Check Shimano's website, the answer you seek is there somewhere. ;-)

it's possible but there are a lot of caveats ... frame and rear hanger matter. For example I could do it on my wifes 2014 Madone 6, but not on my Parlee Z5i. Ofcourse the B-screw has to be all all the way out most likely. My Parlee worked fine with a 30t cassette though.

I've got 11-32 running on a standard Dura Ace Di2 (1st gen). On the 32 and the big front ring the chain is pretty much one link off its limit but no issues.

Raced it this spring on a hilly course and riding it now. Love the range. I have a standard 53-39 crank.

I have a SRAM bike and no dice. I had to swap to the Wifli rear.

I was just looking at the gearing on the Cervelo P5x with SRAM e-tap. The front crank is more a mid-compact and they are using an 11-28, which isn't the climbers I have now.

On Ultegra short-cage it shouldn't be a problem. I run an 11-30 on my spouse's bike and it can cope with more - I know a few who do.

Dura-Ace of an equivalent generation are always a bit tighter - RD9000 barely clears a 30t on the bikes I've worked on. With a RoadLink or similar hanger extender it could be made to work though.

According to this:

https://bike.shimano.com/...9000/RD-9000-SS.html

No

If you are running a standard 53/39 or 50/34 you can get it to work by putting an extra link or two in the chain. The chain will sag while in the small/small and likely in the next two smallest cogs.

That's normally not a problem but you need to be aware of it. It's not ideal but it will work.

I am running 11-32 cassette with 52-36 chainrings. I works good as long as I don't cross chain greater than 52 ring to the 28 cog, if I do that the chain locks up on the chainring. I tired adding an extra chain link but then there is chain sag.

As others have said it "works" with some caveats. I wasn't interested in dealing with the caveats so went with the long ultregra derailleur.

In my experience. 11-30 is fine for the 9000 derailleur but for 11-32, I would go with a 6800 long-cage derailleur instead. You can probably make it work but you'll wish you had the long-cage.

I was able to make the 9000 work with 11-32 but it didn't shift into that 32-ring quite as well as it did all the others.

(Funny how this thread just popped up. I literally just yesterday replaced the DA 9000 RD on my Caad10 with a 6800 long-cage.)
