**SPOILERS** Bike Racing Thread, 2023
Welcome back once again to The Civil Discourse Cycling Thread where it's all about bike racing; the teams, the transfers, the business, but mostly about the racing and the racers and (most important) their present and future nicknames.

The rules are....none, really.

Just keep it light, keep it clean. This is show friends, not show business.

56 days 'til Omloop. In the meantime, some great CX.

The various iterations of this thread are the best thing about ST. Happy new year to everyone. Countdown to opening weekend is on, though we've got the TDU in 2 weeks too.

Gotta feel for Pidcock today. He had the win in hand with MvdP and WvA sitting this one out, but a totally avoidable mistake cost him and it looked like it may have injured him a bit too.

On another note, are there any teams putting out good video content as training camps start getting underway?

Speaking of Astana -
https://www.cyclingnews.com/...azaqstan-team-photo/

Talking about adding Cav PLUS Cees Bol

"... complicated by the fact that Astana have 29 riders under contract and 29 pictured in the press photo, meaning there is only one spot available unless a rider is demoted."

When is Cav gonna put on his LeBron face and make "The Announcement?"

Happy New Year

Wout about to DOMINATE this spring classics season.

You hear it here first ;)

The entire event (IM) is like "death by 1000 cuts" and the best race is minimizing all those cuts and losing less blood than the other guy. - Dev

Details???

What Pauwels Sauce did you put on your frites? Did you buy a set of Toyo tires to ship home? Did you ask Wout to sign your Quad?

And what was ordered from Prik&Tik?

For such grim weather, it looked like quite a party in the crowds.

Speaking of fan zealotry, at Heuden-Zolder I enjoyed the commentary on the section of the course that fans weren't allowed on because it's "religoius ground." Fans? Absolutely not. 80 CX racers flinging mud around? Absolutely!

I'm very sorry to disappoint, but I didn't end up going to the CX race.

Also searched at two different grocery stores, and couldn't find any Pauwel's sauce. Disappointment number two.

But I did get a few bottles of Westvletern, so not all was lost.

To be completely honest, I was too tired to do much more. The last few days felt rather unpleasant and wasn't helped by having to wake up at 3:30 in the morning to take the train to Belgium. Ended up doing some sight seeing in the morning and early afternoon, only to proceed straight to hours-long napping in the late afternoon. I guess that's another way of saying I'm getting old.

Score!

And nothing wrong with napping. That's what vacations are for.

Wind is so cool. Unless you're the P in gap.

Can you send an extra to Roglic, just in case?

Tough one for WvA today but classy of MvdP to cross the line without a big celebration. Here’s the last lap:

Wout and MvdP both appeared tired to me during the race. Neither wanted to give an all out assault and both appeared to be waiting for the sprint before Wout flatted. They've been racing so much but I guess it's hard to turn down the start money. Their start money from CX is more than most people will make in a year.

Did MVDB have a new bike or just for the first time had hidden brake cables?

it's a long year if you're racing cross and road, for sure. and the christmas season is especially nuts. given the intensity of cx, the load of back-to-back races has to be huge.

Especially for these two old guys! Actually, I wonder if they will start to notice a need for more rest than they have been allowing themselves to this point. MvDP was forced to rest the past two seasons at one point or another for injury, but Wout seems to be not only the world's best all around rider, but the most durable as well (setting aside that pesky barrier incident). Wonder if he'll need to condense his schedule in the coming years or if he'll continue his resilience.

Once the two of them have a gap they've got to be thinking of Koksijde a couple days later.

Yeah, there wasn’t any reason for them to go faster once a big gap was created; Iserbyt and van der Haar weren’t going to catch up. They looked evenly matched and that course didn’t afford a lot of opportunities to throw haymakers. Gotta imagine they’re tired after training camp followed by this stretch with all the intensity.

I'm not sure the two were tired. MvdP: “I rode something different from the previous races. I wanted to save a little more for that last half lap." Meanwhile, he's reportedly adding another race before Worlds...
