Stack: how high your handlebars are above your bottom bracket
Reach: how far your handlebars in front of your bottom bracket

so the frame size alone cannot yield both values ?

No, because seat tube angle and head tube height are not standardized.

Stack and reach are actually measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top center of the frame headtube. Dan's intent with stack and reach was to standardize frame specifications for easier fit comparison across brands/models versus the highly variable sizing info of the past based on actual or virtual frame tube lengths.

The distance from the top center of the headtube to the handlebars, or in the case of Tri bikes, the arm pads, shifters and bullhorns, is where bar and stem selections come into play.

i thought understanding stack and reach would help me choose the correct frame
because no local shop has the frame i want .

but i feel it is not the information i need.

i am currently riding a venge geometry 51.8 cm top tube
where the bike feels lower in the front than other road bike frames

so i have spacers and a short stem on it.
which feels correct but does not look like most road bikes.

Just checking avenge geo at 518 mm TT it looks like you have a 49cm frame? This geo shows Stack at 506mm and Reach at 385. The Venge in 52cm shows same stack and about 20mm more reach.

Use the stack and reach info from the Venge to compare against the Cervelo you list in the other thread.

well.
.. believe it or not
i ordered the 52cm model first
only to find out it was an actual 53.7 or so top tube.

so i had to reorder the smaller frame model
which had an actual top tube length of 51.8cm.
.
so i realize i did not explain that above..

virtual vs actual top tube length.

top tube length is madness, forget about it
stack and reach are what you want to know.

If you know what your stack and reach from a fit session is, figure out your handlebar setup and work backwards. The stack/reach database will help, and ignore top tube lengths.

i did not get any numbers from when i sat on the guru machine.

we simply moved the bars and seat and stuff around on the guru machine until it felt best.

then transferred that over to my bike best we could .
