$25,000 Aqua Zone Portland Mile (at the Portland Triathlon)
We've added something new to the 2009 Freshwater Trust Portland Triathlon.

The Aqua Zone Portland Mile is an open water swim race to be held the Saturday evening before the triathlon (Aug. 22). Despite the sluggish economy, we've been able to raise a $25,000 cash purse for the event - which is bigger than any single FINA World Cup purse.

We're spreading it out so there's a payout for age groups, too - as well as $500 for coming closest to your predicted time. Of course, if you win it all you will be handsomely rewarded with $5,000. Here's the breakdown:

Note that every age group winner takes home an Aqua Zone Renegade skinsuit ($400 retail). Trent Grimsey is coming - he's arguably the fastest short-course open water swimmer today, having won the Tiburon Mile and Waikiki Roughwater Swim as well as the Australian National Championships. The venue is perfect for spectating, so you'll get to watch Trent's entire race ringside.

And the best part of it all? The next day you get to do the downtown triathlon! (portlandtri.com)

Hope to see you there.

Wow, that sucks.
I would have been all over that if there was one down here in California. Portland is a little far to go for a mile swim.
