$2400.00 burning a hole in my pocket for a new bike!
So I got a good bonus from work and am going to get a new bike. So you know how much I have to spend. Want a pure Triathlon bike. I have race wheels (700cc) Hed's already. Would like to use them still. Great wheels. Would love to hear suggestions from everyone. I ride a 54cm road bike at this time and really want to get a tri bike. SO WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Seriously - it doesn't matter what you end up riding as long as it fits you well, so go and see your local (or not-so-local) Slowtwitch-approved tri-fitter and buy whatever (s)he recommends. If you live within a 4-6hr drive of Detroit, I'd say go see Tom D. If you live in Southern Cali, there are three or four shops that generally get high marks. If you live in the (BC) lower mainland, I know a guy whom I'd be more than happy to recommend. Post your location and let the magic of the Slowtwitch forum find you a good fit!

Khai,

I do live in BC (Lower mainland) Yes I know that I need to get a bike that fits me correctly but was just wondering what people would buy for the money. Once I have a list of bike then I will head out to the proper shop. I know Greg at Tri-Action and Damion at Peninsula so I can go to either guy and they both know what they are doing. Greg has fitted me before. So who would you suggest and what bike would you suggest.

Put the fire out, take a depth breath and think about what you are doing. Do some research on this website on Dan;s dealer listing. Talk to some people in your area about where they bought their bikes and what their experience has been like. You're not so much buying a bike, a you are buying a store to service your bike needs after the sale and to fit you correctly and make a good recommendation. Go with the place you can establish a relationship with, trust, and call upon to take good care of you. Once you establish that relationship, honor it. It will pay dividends.

Good luck in your search. Let us know what you come up with.

Listen to Tom, as a consumer I can add little other than your bike-fitter and mechanic can turn into a long-time relationship. That's where the real investment is.

Greg @ Tri-Action is the man! I love that guy. He set me up as well as several of my friends, and is a solid dude all 'round. Assuming he carried the line I was interested in, I'd buy a bike from him any day.

Do you ride shallow or steep? If you're a "slam" kinda fellow it's tough to beat Felt. Maybe a a Cervelo Soloist. If you like steep, then I'd go with a Cervelo Dual or a Hwy Nineteen Richter Comp. Dan's recent article on QR seemed pretty positive, but I'll refrain from commenting on that line simply because I know nothing about QR bikes.

Another option may be to cannibalize your current ride and blow the majority of your cash on a sick frame. I've been eyeing a Titan-Flex ever since that first epic on them thread a while back, and the frame alone is definitely in your price range. Same goes for a lot of other high-end frames. If you have decent components now and don't need that other bike (ie it ain't your roadie), that may be an option to explore.

Khai's suggestion of cannibalizing your current frame and going with a TitanFlex might work if you're up to it. I'm sure Tom (the builder of TitanFlex bikes) would be able to work something out to come up with a pretty good deal filling in whatever parts might be needed (i.e. bar end shifters, clip-on's,...) while still using what you have. Tom's told me there is at least on TF somewhere out on the west coast (Penticton?) so you can probably try it out. Might be worth a call. They're nice bikes.

You may also want to try out the Bike Barn in Penticton. They have an enormous selection, great deals, and low overhead.

I second Khai's advice on Greg at TriAction in Coquitlam, in fact I sent him there! I also second what everyone has said, deal with someone who has real experince with tri bikes and has ridden one. You will be so surprised when you talk to most of the local LBS, mostly will go the safe route or the old school roadie route and sell you a raod bike!

I spoke to Greg recently, he has some new P3s and Argon18 Mercury in stock, but will get the Dual, P2, Solo, and some Kestrels, eta January, sometime. I trust Greg more than any other store owner when it comes to tri fitting and tri bikes in Van area, the pickings are so slim. If the 2400 is CND, then you are in the Dual and CDale range. In Vancouver for pure tri bikes here are your choices:

LaBicc: Litespeed, Argon18 and Cervelo (and Trek but not sure about the TT or tri bikes)

Bike Sports Pacific: CDale

Campione: QR

Wildings (sic) in Mission: Softride

Non are hardcore triathletes, however one employee at La Bic is member of Pacific Spirit club so maybe things will work out over there. My experince is most of these stores will sell you a road bike first, especially La Bic and Campione.

P/s I dont work for Greg @ Tri Action or get a commission in anyway!. I am just a very happy customer. I ride a 2003 P2 54 650cc, mostly stock and cant be happier, and I got it from Greg!

Not taking anything away from your Guru - there are a lot of people in the world, who are fast and dont have FIST (what does that mean) fitting or any professional fitting for that matter. I think that fitting you on a bike is no rocket science. A digital camera on a stable surface to take pictures from the front and the side on a trainer and a basic grafic program is all you need in my opinion.

While I took some inspiration from this site and was professionally fittet, I changed my position alone and I feel very comfortable.

To your question: You are lucky, your 2400 USD is worth about 4000 USD in Europe, because our prices are so much higher here. You have a big choice of great bikes - I would consider:

QR Caliente

Cervelo P3

Felt S22

In my opinion the P3 seems to be the fastest among them, the Caliente the most comfortable (personally I dont care what science says if the majority of riders say otherwise - and they say the carbon seatstays work great) and the Felt S22 the most economic. With that amount of money I would have them build up for me with Campy Chorus and Syntace C2. Or you take the complete bikes with ultegra and use the spare money otherwise (which I would do).

Of course you should spend only 2200, 200$ for things like pedals, water bottle cages, another stem if the one provided doesn't fit, a saddle upgrade ...

Let me clear a few thing up quickly. I am not new to the sport but have been away from racing for a couple of years. I am in the market for a new tri bike and have around $2400 US or $3200 Can. to spend. In your opinion what are some bikes around this price range that you would suggest. Obviously a bike that fits is the best one. Obviously going to my guy Greg is the best move. All I was asking is what would you look at in this price range.

Sorry did not answer your question the first time. For that money and being in Vancouver I would say either the P2 or Dual (especially the 04 version as the spec appears to have been upgraded).

If you are going 650 there are two pairs of race wheels on sale @ the tribc site. Dual @2500 CND plus a pair of used Hed jets will set you back $3100 CND. There is a pair of Zipp 404 front and Corima disk for $1,000 CND as well.

These would be my choicest, but then I am biased as I ride a Cervelo.

Hmm, I'd find a good Felt dealer, order a B2 complete and ask for them to keep the Zipps as you already have race wheels.

You'd get a top of the line frame (B2) with top of the line components (DA10, carbon post, Project X, etc...)

JamesFrames.com builds some very nice frames as well, very affordable. He's got access to the GT Superbike tubing used in the Project '96 bikes and can build you whatever you like in geometry and frame design.
